Can a driver that makes the Chase that is in the top 6 at the start of the Chase possibly win if they don't win a race? Case in point, can a driver have no more than 1 or 2 DNF's (I know Jimmie did one year, but won 5 races in the Chase) and out of 8 races have no lower than 6th or no higher than 2nd win it all?:dunno:

It certainly is possible to win the chase without winning a race. Finish every race in the top 5 with a couple of seconds, and you would be darned likely to win it. The only way to beat you would be for one driver to win several and have no more than one bad day.

The average points earned for a top 5 with no wins would roughly be 167.5 pts per race (the average for 2-4). Total of 1675 for ten races. This is with no laps led, but it would be unlikely not to lead a few races, so you could probably add 10-20 more points to the total. Jimmie Johnson won last year with 1482 points which included his bonus points of ten for each win during regular season.

It's possible but not likely.(Watch it happen this year...) If someone doesn't have a bad race and finishes in the top 10 every week and everyone else has at least 1 bad race than it could happen. If I remember correctly, Jeff Gordon avged a 5th place finish in the chase 1 year and still lost to JJ.

My hypothesis is based on an average finish of 2nd through 5th, or 3rd and a half. The points total would be more than all but one Chase winner.

Jeff needs to worry about winning races before the chase starts so that he is near the front once the points are reset.
