I know we have had some breakthroughs because of NASA but is it worth the cost? You pray every launch comes back safe and we learn something each time we go. Could our money be used in better places like health care ect.? thoughts

i see where your coming from, but yes, it's worth it it IMO. without space programs, we wouldn't really have a good idea of what's out there. which, we still don't really since it's such a slow process

I heard Jim Phillips talking about it and thought it would be an intrusting topic.

considering the amount of money we waste on farm subsidies and other useless pork, NASA is a drop in the bucket. And it's cool too.

Yep. And when that "Black Swan" of a 5 mile-wide asteroid bears down at us and threatens to split the globe in half, don't tell me we can't do anything about it because we needed to spend the money on corn research back in 2007.

Heck, all you would have to do is hold the government accountable for its spending and there would be money for every thing and any thing.

NASA is most definitely worth it. They sponsor over 200 FIRST Robotics Competitions, which in turn, leads HS students down a path of science, math, and engineering, like me.

Just thought I'd add that. And I know a few NASA engineers. (And the guy that designed the Segway, not NASA person, thought)

Me, being a normal person thinks that NASA is a waste of money and we should give it to better uses, such as bol, stering the world's strongest army and helping Katrina victims and the homeless.

100% yes, it is at the very core of man kind to explore, go where others haven't regardless if some people think we know it all or have seen it all. There is enough money out there to go around, people are just greedy

You can most likely thank NASA for GPS, inclement weather forecasting, Google Earth, and reduced cable (and thus internet) prices, among many other things.

Also, our military relies a lot on satellite imagery, satellite datalinks, and GPS (which uses satellites).

As to helping Katrina victims...due to weather satellites, the people along the coast of Mississippi and Louisiana were given four days warning that a catastrophic hurricane would hit in their immediate vicinity. It is not NASAs fault that some chose to completely ignore such a warning.

For people to think NASA is not worth it, is crazy!!!! Fine vol and I live in the county, Brevard, were the shuttle and atlis rockets lift off from, so I do find it odd that he is the person who posted this thread! the Number one thing we have because of NASA is.... Plastic!!!!! Where whould we be w/o plastic? There is hardly anything that isn't made of plastic! They're also responsible for microwaves, cell phones, computers, ect. If you ask me (which you didn't), I think that all of these politician, sports stars, movie stars, and musicians, who make millions upon millions every year, should be taxed higher to help w/ Katrina victims, the homeless, and education! Instead of taking it away from NASA!

Oh I know somewhere else we are spending A TON of money where we could be spending elsewhere and on our own people... but this isn't the politics forum.

I'm a big fan of Velcro and Tang. NASA has my thumbs up.

Oh, and the space exploration and domination is fine too.

That's true..

Ok, keep NASA going. One day we'll have launch all of our trash into space to burn in the atmosphere because of shortage of landfills.
