I never got into a game but I was on the same team as Bill Bates in high school. He was a senior and I was a Frosh and we both wore #40 practice jerseys. He pounded me for that in every practice.
I played with a guy that walked on at UT named Bob Williams. I also played against Wilhoit, and a back from Antioch whose name I cant think of to save my life at the moment.
I played against Al Wilson in '92. He was supposed to be a running back. But the starting QB was out and he filled in. Absolutely could not be touched playing the option. Badass football player no matter where he went to college.
I got knocked silly by Chad Clifton on a kick off return my freshman year of high school on Sky Hawk Field in Martin. I think Will Offenhusle(spelling) may have been a freshman my senior year, but don't really remember going up against him.
Also forgot, I balled with Josh Tabb one time. At the time I thought he was the second coming.
Weezy almost went to Paducah Tilghman for H.S. to be coached by a guy I fish with. His mom didn't think "he would start" so they transfered.
Saw him first hand in the State Championship against Jon Scheyer. He was a man among boys, and was the only reason his very untalented team made it that far in such a competitive basketball state. Jon lit him up for something like 26 points and Glenbrook ran up the score on that untalented Carbondale team.
I was on the same football team as Shawn Summers and Jerry Colquitt in high school. We played against James "Little Man" Stewart and Todd Helton. I went 1-3 against Todd Helton in a baseball game as well. In football, I was a really good cheerleader wearing pads on the sidelines!
I narrowly avoided having to play against Jermaine Copeland. And thank God for that. I was in 8th grade when my high school played his team in the playoffs. We had a running back that was being recruited by a couple of plays, I think Georgia Tech was the biggest school after him. First kick Copeland laid our RB out cold. Needless to say we got beat pretty badly that year.
The most incredible athelete I ever competed against was Larry Cantrell from Goodlettsville. He scored all the track teams points enough to win the State Title all by himself. That was in the mid 80s. That guy could flat out run. 10.4 in the 100 meters may still be the state record. Dude won the 100, 200, & 400 hundreds in all three years in high school.
