Myth that the SEC is bad this year

I took a look at some of the out of conference games played and won or close to won by our SEC teams this year and I'm thinking that, just like last year, people are going to underestimate us in the tournament.

Consider:

Florida beat Ohio State by 26 and lost by 2 in overtime to Kansas (with one or two of the Gators suffering from mono) and in a Jayhawk-friendly environ in Vegas.

Tennessee beat Memphis, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas. Heck, if you were in the Big 12 you might be undefeated!

I thought the Big 12 just awarded us an extra W over TT after beating TX and OSU.

Your point is well-made (despite the TN Tech miscue). I don't think the SEC gets quite enough respect. There are a number of quality teams in the SEC, and they beat up on each other during conference play -- just like they do in football.

Parity doesn't necessarily signify weakness. I think we could sneak up on the field just like we did last year (2 SEC teams in the Final Four). And don't forget about South Carolina, an NCAA tournament outcast who went on to win the NIT in two consecutive years. To win the NIT, you have to be better than the 65th best team in the nation.

Two teams with a quality win(s) outside the conference does not a tough conference make.

There may be a number of "quality" teams, but there is only one "very good" team.

Before we get too carried away with the SEC's OOC wins, remember that Winthrop, George Mason, UC-Irvine, Furman, and Appalachian St all have wins in our conference.

The SEC, in my estimation, has one very good team and 10 more that range from solid to dangerous, and the fact is that there isn't alot of difference between 2-11 in the conference.

I concur except that there are three teams in this conference that are going to the Big Dance that, should they get hot, could easily advance to Elite Eight. Would you not agree?

Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, and LSU.

If you ammend that to "hot with good match-ups," then I'm not sure it is limited to three. Kentucky can play with top ten teams on given nights, Vandy or UT can shoot themselves past anybody, Alabama (if they get in) has the talent and athleticism to do the trick, and Florida can play with anybody in the country.

All of them save Florida are also capable of being upset by a mid-major at-large team.

I'm disagreeing that we are underrated. 1 good team plus 10 solid ones doesn't make you an outstanding league. It makes you a solid league with power at the top, which is how I think we are perceived.

What 3 do you think can make it that far? Florida, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt?

Yeah, I'm kinda' up in the air on this one. I guess I'll take a wait and see. Seems I'm surprised every year...one way or another. I never would have guessed we'd have half of the final four last year and I think that deserves a little respect from the Jerry Palms of the world when deciding how many the SEC should get in.

The only way Vanderbilt makes the Elite Eight is if 56 teams arrive at tournament sites next Thursday and Friday and decide to forfeit.
