I know it's been a while since last week's game, but I wanted to express my opinions on what we learned about this team so far, and see if you wonderful, intelligent Vol fans agree with me.

I tell you what, when the game started, and we had 2 TO's on our first 2 drives, I was thinking, "Oh boy, here we go again!" But, of course, as the game went on it got much MUCH better. I believe all of those early mistakes were due to raw nerves. Once the team got settled in, everything looked much better.

How great is it, as a Vol fan, to be able to just sit back and enjoy a good old fashion UT beating? How long has it been since we've been able to enjoy that? Seriously? I mean, yes, there have been games in recent past (2007 and 2006) where we blew out opponents, but you never felt comfortable. I always felt like Chavis and Fulmer would allow the teams to come back (like USCe in 2007 and UF in 2006).

Monte FREAKIN' Kiffin: WKU was 1-11 on 3rd down...and that single 3rd down conversion was on 3rd and 1. How awesome was that? Meanwhile, LSU facing a team that went 0-12 last year gives up 400+ yards and that team goes 10-14 on 3rd down...most of those on 3rd and long. Will Chavis EVER learn???

The things that made me smile the most were the little things. Yes, the little things. The fact that our coach didn't clap on the sideline when we fumbled 3 times in 2 series. The fact that we didn't stop attacking on offense despite being up 35-0 (how awesome was that when the coaching staff fired up the players midway through the 3rd, letting them know the game was not over?? Fulmer would've called the dogs off when the score was 14-0).

The little things...the fact that when Stephens came into the game, our coach let him get some real experience and throw the ball, still attacking. Not just running the ball every single play for the final 12 minutes the way Fulmer would've done it, getting ZERO quality reps for our back-up. (Remember '06 versus Cal? Crompton comes in, gets a couple drives, and gets hardly any passing attempts. Fulmer was so worried about other teams thinking that he was running up the score, that he never gave his back-ups quality reps. He said so as much in the Phillip Fulmer show that Sunday...said they "Let Cal off the hook" because they didn't want to run up the score). Watching an unpredictable defense with disguised blitzes and no blown coverage.

Watching a disciplined, physical team. Watching Bryce Brown power his way into the end zone. Foster would've fumbled on that play. Watching the RBs make a quick decision and hit the hole hard...not dance constantly at the line of scrimmage the way Riggs and Houston would on every play.

Watching freshmen get some quality playing time...watching Hancock get 5 excellent catches after getting ZERO last year (this coaching staff KNOWS who belongs on the field...for some reason, Fulmer would rather play a child molester at WR than Hancock).

Yes, my fellow Vol fans. I was literally almost in tears watching GOOD football on Saturday. I know it was only Western Kentucky, but it wasn't WKU's decision to let these freshmen play. It wasn't WKU who decided the Vols were gonna play hard for 60 minutes. It wasn't WKU who allowed the Vols to have excellent execution on offense and defense. It wasn't WKU who expected their team to play at their maximum potential. It wasn't WKU's decision to have physical, demanding, full-contact practices during Fall camp. It was this coach staff...this coaching staff is the real deal, fellas. And I have NEVER been more excited to be a Vol fan.

I think WKU is getting underrated by most. They have been a provisional FBS team for two years, and before that they were competing for FCS titles. I bet they will surprise a couple of people this year.

Central Arkansas
FIU
The Raging Cajuns
North Texas
They could surprise the team Urban Meyer said was better talent wise than us, that would be Troy
Louisiana Monroe
Florida Atlantic.

A 7 win season is very unlikely, but all Vol fans should be praying for it.

I think it is likely that they win 5 games this year, which is not truly awful for a first year FBS team.

Also I was pumped to see the WRs catching everything that was thrown to them. I don't remember seeing a drop on Saturday. When was the last time that happened?

Hear me out... actually hear Lane out. Lane Kiffin : GoVolsXtra audio : Knoxville Podcasts : GoVolsXtra.com: University of Tennessee sports news from The Knoxville News Sentinel

Lane said his dad was watching just as much film on WKU as he would if it was Florida. He researched the Offensive coordinator from WKU who came from Wyoming. Lane said he teaches that same style to his players.

Sure, we have better athletes, why discount that we were actually better prepared than WKU as well? People always complain about how Chavis lacked the ability to make adjustments, maybe our staff is actually competent enough now to make meaningful adjustments, and our D never let them gain any momentum asside from the turnovers the hilltoppers got.

Look... I'm not saying WKU is in the top half of the sun belt, but alot of folks are saying they're the worst FBS team, and I don't think they will play like the worst FBS team the rest of the season. I certainly could be wrong, but unlike where Phil would let up on the gas, we kept pushing till the final 2 minutes, and made them look worse than they are.

I was pretty happy to see Tennessee play football in the second half. I've been missing that.
