or at least the Blu Ray drive decided it would stop reading all media. I've tried all the troubleshooting methods, i've completely reset the system and still nothing.

I can't return it to Sony because I don't have the original receipt and Sony is quite specific about requiring a copy of it. In their FAQ's, even the "gift" PS3 is covered, telling you to contact the purchaser for a receipt because without it, the system is considered out of warranty.

btw, it's a 40gb system manufactured 9-2007.

there are a couple of ebay sellers with the blu ray drives for sale and I'm thinking about going that route.

Unless somebody here has a better alternative.

That's surprising. I went online when my grandson's ps2 crapped out a few years ago. They asked for the serial number, model number etc. from the tag on the unit and I sent it in and they fixed it free. I've always heard Sony is very good with their warrenties. Check out their stuff online.

I had the same thing happen to me. Where did you get it at? I got mine at Circuit City and they can reprint your receipt, which I did since I didn't have the original. I contacted the support and they sent me a box to send it to them to get fixed. Works fine now.

I'm the third owner. I know the original owner and he's already tried going to the gamestop where he originally purchased it and they only keep records for 3 months.

I have checked out Sony's website. I can submit a phone request for service but it will be for out of warranty service.

My son's PSP had an issue where the UMD drive latch broke. Sony replaced it OOW for an $80 fee. I've heard that OOW PS3 service is in the neighborhood of $150.

btw, it's becoming increasingly likely that the failure was due to the 2.42 firmware update. The PS3 forums has a massive thread regarding systems being bricked after an update. Well, not completely bricked, just the BR drive. I'm far from the only person having this issue.

Like hman said, call Sony. I've had a couple problems that they went above and beyond for. First was a car stereo that was out of warranty. Sony rep apologized and added 3 mos to the warranty so it would be covered. Another time they sent me a camcorder to use on vacation while mine was being repaired. I'm a Sony guy for life.

what's funny is that on the PS3 forums, there are a lot of people saying that it's impossible for the problems to be related to the firmware and that people with the same problems I'm having are either lying or Xbox fans trolling the PS3 boards.

Anybody who's ever screwed up a BIOS flash knows that software updates can brick a machine. I also have a hard time believing it's "the blu ray laser just wears out" not when there are original PS1's still alive and well.

I actually still have a first generation PS1 somewhere that was still alive the last time I checked. Granted it was about a year ago, but still it has had a good long life.

My buddy's 2 month old PS3 crashed. 360 is definitely not the only system with problems.

Yeah its funny, my old first gen XBOX went through 6 military deployments and went through tons of abuse, but never failed, and still works. On the flip side of that, I have been through 7 360's in the last two years. Amazing!!!

I think most can be attributed to meeting deadlines and not pushing the release back. Microsoft was set on being the first next gen console on the market, which probably had a bearing on the problems they have been having. I heard Microsoft knew about the 3 red ring problems before release and released it anyways because they didn't know how to fix it.

I'm coming up on a year of having my Elite without a single problem.
I went with an elite in March and havent had a problem either. I dont know much about Sony's customer service since I dont own a PS3, but I would be extremely upset if I paid 400 or whatever dollars for a product that screwed up and they tried to give me the run around. At least Xbox repairs under warranty, even though the original problem always seems to come back.

It is amazing to me how many 360s you had to go through up to that point though. WOW.

Tell me about it!!! One of the refurbs that they sent back to me after the RROD, wasnt even able to go onto Live for some reason. Had to send that one back too, but like I said, No problems with the Elite and it doesnt sound like a F18 is taking off in my bedroom!!!
