Hello Volnation -
I just wanted to share my experience at the FL game this past weekend. If it's boring or long I apologize. First, I live in Kansas City now and every year my wife and I make 1 trip to Neyland Stadium for a game (always a big game). When we go we always start planning after the bowl game. I knew right away that the Fl game was a must this year. As always we stay in Gatlinburg for a few days before every game to get some Smokey Mountain action (trout fishing, hiking, etc.). This year was awesome for us because my best friend and his wife flew up for the game from FL also to attend with us (Gator fans). We had a great time in Gatlinburg but the whole time my friend and I knew what was looming come gameday. Friday night we got dinner and hit the sack early to get an awesome tailgate spot for Gameday (5am) parking lot at the liquor store on Cumberland Ave. Tailgating was a blast as always. Did I mention how much construction is going on Cumberland Ave and on campus?
As we drank all the beer and moonshine before gametime I made sure to make it over for the Vol Walk. And let me say the Vol Walk was a disappointment. They have barricaded off the fans this year which was a disappointment because I like to get rowdy and give the players chest bumps. But I understand why they have to these days with so much crazy crap going on in the world but still nonetheless it wasn't the same as years past. After the Vol Walk we walked back to tailgate for a few to get some more drinks in before going into the game. Once we got into the game I was in my happy place that I oh so look forward to since circling this game on my calendar.
But before I get going about my experience of the game let me say this...every year me and my friend make a prediction and this year I couldn't do it. Because all I cared about was WINNING. I could careless about the score. Just win baby!
Now back to the game. We sat in Section DD, Row 4. Now most of you know that section DD is on the visiting sidelines upper deck 50 yard line (GREAT SEATS). With that being said, it was HOTTER than a MOFO!!! We were dying in the heat! Ppl all around us were dropping like flies. But I didn't come all the way from Kansas City to pack my balls up to leave early for this game. Oh no not me! I spent to much money and to much driving to give up on my Vols. We hung tough but my wife was struggling and at halftime she said to hell with this I'm going to half barrel to watch the rest of the game. She thought the game was over and I knew different. This was her third game in person and the last 2 games were 2013 UGA where pig fumbled in the end zone and last years collapse against Oklahoma in OT so she thought she was bad luck. Well I said to her be careful and see ya after the game, I'm staying. She went on her way and I stayed. However, ten minutes later my beautiful wife showed back up next to me and cheered on the Vols to the very end! I asked what changed? She said F that I didn't come this far to give up on them. So we cheered on the Vols with the sun in our face the whole time and witnessed pandemonium rain.
Remember I mentioned my gator friends? Well they left with 10 minutes. He said this game is over...I'm out! I can understand his reasoning but I would have stayed and watched history regardless of fan affiliation. But that's just me. They had a great time and great experience for their first time at Neyland even though they loss.
Neyland Stadium was gorgeous on Saturday regardless of the HEAT! The last minute of the game all I could think about was all the heartaches in this rivalry of the last 11 years. So much we have endured as Vol fans and to finally beat those gators made it that much sweeter. To witness it in person and to have my wife make her 3rd appearance a charm was priceless. I was crying my eyes out as the clock hit 0:00 and hugging all Vol fans around me. Soaking in every moment and memory I could to take back with me home. I sat there and watched all of the celebration as Team 120 celebrated with the fans and watched Jones orchestrate Rocky Top! This game will never be forgotten for me nor my wife. We partied after the game and chanted Its great to be a Tennessee Vol with all the fans leaving the stadium. I picked up the Knox News Sentinel newspaper the next day before leaving town to frame in my man cave that says "Who's counting now"?.
Anyways that's the gist of my trip summed up in short. As always Go Vols!
