Read the VQ article on Wilcox being able to install defensive schemes that he wasn't able to do last year due to limitations.

Some possible schemes

Base 4-3

I love the fact that we will be able to have a defense that will at least be able to do a lot of things to match up better with opposing teams this year. When Maggitt and Smith are coming off the edge, it is going to be exciting to watch. Dooley and Wilcox seem to be very pleased with what they will be able to show defensively this year.

His schemes will continue to grow and grow in the upcoming years. I hope it is not as vanilla as last year.

Waggner was opportunistic last year for those 5 ints. He wasn't a lock down corner. However, if he's starting over Moore, Lanier, Coleman, Gordon, Evans, et al, I would assume that he has continued to improve his game.

Let's hope this is the case, Dooley did say yesterday he was the most consistent performer so far this year in the secondary.

Nice post OP

Those different sets, even if not exactly the way Wilcox sees them, show a lot of versatility in the players we are recruiting and the versatility that we can show on defense.

Gone are the days when you can simply use your base defense every week. Just about every team on our schedule is going to show us a different look and you have to prepare the personnel packages to coincide.

I really like the direction the recruiting is going as far as bringing in versatile, hybrid type players like Maggitt and Moore and hope this trend continues. I also really like our flexible defensive strategy.

Waggner played well at CB last year, besides what some on here may say. He had two horrible plays at safety: the whiff on Jefferson at the LSU game where he came up passive, ducked his head and closed his eyes. And his lack of physicality when running down the sideline with L. James of Oregon. His speed was enough to have him there. This is what sticks in peoples minds and why some people think he's terrible. Call it luck or whatever, but if a guy has multiple picks and fumble recoveries it means he's around the ball. As a coach, you love that about any player. He's not a physical safety and has to think too much. He's physical for a corner, and that's what they want. There are very few "shut down" corners in college fb, though you will hear that quite a bit on here. 99% of DB's that have to defend a wr, one on one, for more than 4 seconds are going to get beat. You need a db that will get off his block, get upfield and cut off the angle on a run play, that will be physical with the wr, and have covering abilities until your DL can get to the QB.

Waggner got beat out for starting corner spot by a freshman. Tells me all I need to know about how the coaches feel about him.

One go vols xtra report that says he lined up at corner with the ones in the open session vs a couple of weeks now saying teague and Coleman were starters with waggner playing safety and nickel corner. I believe I understand what's going on

Ever think that they were trying to find the best pieces to run their nickel package or 4-2-5? If you missed the memo he is starting at CB so what the heck does it matter what happened in practice one day?

Waggner is starting at one corner and Coleman at the other corner after beating out Teague, but that battle isn't over. That's what's going on, so now you do know.

I'm sure they were and I think that would be an Awsome backfield but my statement was that at some point for about two weeks waggner lost his starting job to a freshman.

No lol Coleman and teague were both starting and waggner was working with safetys

Wilcox should be able to show what he can do better this year. Our D roster was pretty thin last year
