I was a wee lad then, so I don't remember it, but I've studied the ramifications. We likely don't fall off like we did and I think we at least play Miami pretty tough. We weren't that far behind in the talent category. As others have said, 03.
01 we were going to play in the Rose Bowl for the NC after draining the Swamp last game of the season, until we laid an egg in the SEC Championship game and sent Neb out there to be embarrassed while we went to the Citrus Bowl and flogged Meatchicken.
That SECC game was one of the costliest losses in program history.
That's the one thing, Fulmer could somehow blow it with all that talent. I can't wrap my head around how we lost to a garbage Memphis team in 96. I don't think Heupel could possibly lose a game like that. Yes, the USCjr game was bad, but he hasn't come close to losing to G5 with a losing record and wouldn't.
Even in 99 they almost lost to Memphis again. I don't know how the offense could struggle that much, unless the talent gap wasn't near as big as it is now. Like UAB should be a comparable team and we could probably beat them running up the gut all day.
