'26 MS WR Tristen Keys (lsu commit)

Nico absolutely was. He just developed into a player you don’t, for the money his camp wanted. He’d probably still be our starting qb if he hadn’t skipped practice.
Agreed, again. Back to my point.

Wide Receiver is NOT the same position as QB. Nico turned out not to be worth what he was being paid. Yes he has all the talent.

Nico's not a good example bc his issues were processing, making reads, and internal timing. He was also immature.

Wide Receiver doesnt SEEM to require that same executive brain function.

Nico was pretty good until one of those hard hits he took against Oklahoma. His timing was thrown off after that for one reason or another. He's definitely super talented and he showed glimpses at times (1st half of the UGA game for instance and some plays he made against Bama), but never really put it all together for a full game.

so nothing different than the same promise Nico had. he had all the tangibles and intangibles while in HS.
So because of the Nico situation we should never really pay another offensive player? You make it sound like Nico is the norm. He isn’t. At some point we are gonna have to pay up for these game breaking WRs.

Nico certainly isn't the exception either. most qbs transfer, and considering its only about 50% of 5 stars that get drafted its not like being highly ranked is a guarantee either.

you guys are cherry picking the good experiences from schools paying players, and just flat out ignoring all the cases where it doesn't work out. you act like TN should be this magical force that is able to take the 1 guy that worked out for LSU, and the 1 guy that worked out for OSU, the 2 guys that worked out for Georgia, and somehow just make it a thing every year at a every position, with no misses. without realising that no school does this magical perfect strategy of only paying the good guys lots of money.

what makes you say that?

people thought Nico was that dude in high school too. best dang tape, generational talent that was going to lead us to the promised land, no way to mess him up, ready to play now. everyone thought the crazy, at the time, money we were paying for Nico was worth every penny. especially because it was a higher profile position
Nico wasn’t worth every penny. We were just a desperate program at the time and Heupel made a bad evaluation. There wasn’t an NIL market value for HS QBs that were even in the same ballpark as what Nico was getting at the time. We ironically were the school that started this mess or at least got it started when it did. However the difference in paying a WR and paying a QB like Nico is it’s a lot easier to cut bait with a receiver that’s a bust than it is to cut bait with a QB that’s a bust when you only have an inexperienced RS Fr behind him and a true freshman that isn’t physically ready to play in the SEC yet. The timing of the Nico debacle was really the problem. Had he just hit the portal after the CFP game we likely land an Avery Johnson or a Sawyer Robertson because they would’ve gotten the opportunity to go through spring camp and we would’ve had more time to put weapons around either of those guys. Also if Keys decides to sit out of practice the day before the spring game and hit the portal it doesn’t uproot the entire offense. It’s not quite the same dynamic as a QB from a roster management standpoint

It actually kind of does in our offense, but you’re still correct. This program is currently in a position where we can’t afford to not pay him. Especially if their plan for Wyatt is to make him gain 50 pounds and play Leo. WR recruiting and development has been abysmal with this staff and if for nothing else we need to pay him whatever it takes just to see if Kelsey Pope is capable of developing a guy into something that just closely resembles an NFL WR1. Because that’s ultimately his job, and if he can’t do it with Keys I’m not sure he can do it with anyone

This is why WRs can start as freshman and sophomores instead of riding the bench until they become upperclassmen. That is pretty much the only position where that is the case in the SEC.
