I watched the news tonight and the top stories included:

1. The cyclone in Myanmar (death toll could reach 100k)

2. The earthquake in China (death toll likely in the 10's of thousands)

3. The latest tornados (death toll of 30 or so)

4. The fires in Florida.

Another reminder that we're pretty insignificant.

Did someone give Mother Nature some Chiffon Margarine? (some of you are too young to know this reference).

It ain't nice to fool Mother Nature. Hope all this going on isn't the sign of the beginning of the apocalypse.

Both my wife and son are currently in China ...just to the north of there. Can't reach them by phone today yet. Hope they are OK....

the death toll in Burma could have been drastically reduced if the paranoid thugs in the ruling junta had bothered to adequately warn the people of the impending storm.

The majority who got word of the coming storm got it through sources outside the country. Very pathetic.

We had two F2 tornadoes roll through town Sunday morning. My office still doesn't have power back and thanks to a 100 ft sweet gum tree that fell from my yard, my neighbor wins a new deck and roof from the insurance company.

Heard an interesting point on NPR this morning re the China quake.

To summarize, Chinese government is taking particular interest to be seen as involved directly in this disaster because there is a traditional sentiment there that natural disasters tend to be seen as omens of change for ruling dynasties. No one is predicting any fall of the government, but it seems to be a sensitive topic for the Chinese.

Interesting.
