Agree tee Martin was never a great pure drop back passing qb. Peerless price saved him few times .tee was a great athlete who could turn up field and beat you with his legs . Think his passing game got better as his went along .

He was actually a decent drop back passer. He ran out of necessity but was NEVER considered a scrambler. He had great straight ahead speed, but never ran around away from trouble to create big plays

Jay Graham. Great straight ahead speed, but wasn’t very elusive and he cost us some games against Florida with his fumbles.

Cost us games, as in more than one, against Florida?


I know his long TD run against OSU was a game breaker as was the long TD run against Alabama in 1996

I was wrong about it being multiple games against Florida. Graham had two lost fumbles in the blown lead against Florida in 1995.

1996 was 4 interceptions - tipped passes or receiver and QB not on the same page about where the ball was going.. I just watched the 1996 game on YouTube because individual turnovers are not listed on sportsreference or UT Athletics websites.

Graham was a decent RB, but after seeing several people listing him in their top 5, I am convinced he was overrated. In the 1990’s he was either the 5th or 6th best RB we had. I’d have Graham behind Monterio Hardesty and Cedric Houston. Maybe tied with Arian Foster for 8th best Fulmer RB, when including all Fulmer RB’s. Both Foster and Graham seemed to cough the ball up too easily (though it’s near impossible to track fumbles from the 1990’s as I have not found a stats website that lists fumbles for individuals.

Another factor I have considered with Graham is that we had an exceptional passing game during his time as a starter, so he had more opportunities than most to catch the defense off guard, but he struggled to make linemen miss and break tackles.

Oh I think Graham was better than both Houston and Hardesty. Foster didn't fumble often but fumbled in a couple untimely situations. I put Foster in my second 5

I remember Hardesty being tough like Sampson. He had to run into brick walls on the regular, thanks to our passing struggles. That’s why I think so highly of him.

Hes a tough one. Hurd had a lot of 2 or 3 yard runs where it looked like nobody got blocked and he didn’t have the wiggle to make guys miss much. Probably a guy who was miscast in a flag football offense that was suspect to begin with.

That 2015 Outback bowl performance was impressive. We ran out of the I for a lot of that game. Butch was saying at the time, the 2016 Vols we're going to utilize the I formation often, in an effort to cater to Hurd's strengths. Of course we never did it without any explanation from Butch

The Manning guy could never beat Florida - he should be on the top 10 list of the most crappy players that played the game of football ever in the history of sports. He was such a loser when it came time to play in the big games.

As long as he got 2 years of playing time, he was gonna make the league off talent alone. That's regardless of where he went.

Had he gone to bama he would have either capitulated and bought into Saban's system or been in the dog house before transferring after a couple of years if he acted like some of the rumors said he did here.

He still made it to the league as a WR.
