Well after perusing Berry4Heisman.com and still imagining what might be holding up the TN press conference, I decided rather than reloading the link and hating Dish Network more, I would start a thread to ask a question.

What area do you think will be most improved on the team this season? Are there any areas you think will be worse?

Starting with Lincoln it sounds like he has worked out a ton and has gotten mentally in a better place than he was last year. I expect also that having Coach Gran in charge, and moving back into a protect formation will really help us on special teams. Overall I expect improvement there.

At RB Hardesty would like to make it to the NFL and he knows that he still has to have a combine, but he really needs 1 great season at UT this year. Oku and Brown and Taureen Poole will all help. I feel that this unit will be better than last year, and my TV will be safer from almost being broken in my wrath of CRUCIAL fumbles that made male TN fans feel the same stomach pain as when you were kicked in the testes.

Monte Kiffin and Coach Orgeron? I think I am expecting our defense to not drop off, which is really saying something. I also expect even more turnovers. Our defense was on the field way too long last season. Harder to explode when you have been rushing the QB for 3/4 of the game. I think Orgeron will have people fired up in a way we havent had since the days of Al Wilson, Leonard Little, Sean Ellis (with the exception of Overstreet who fired himself up).

QB play will be better under a system that is simpler but the most significant reason by far will be that our offensive line should be the most improved unit.

Being an offensive lineman can be very simple or incredible complex. Clawson's system worked when he had guys at Richmond who were 260 and who ran around like TEs. It also worked because they were used to it. He tried to start off his first year doing his greatest hits with players who did not even get the basics yet. Our O Line looked so confused that they were weak. Uncertainty is the enemy of aggression. When you are frozen and thinking about what to do post snap you lack the critical moment when you explode into another person and throw them back. The days of the shuffling and confused offensive line are over. They will hit hard and run forward on running plays. They will create a wall that no one is getting through for several seconds on passing plays.

I am absolutely fired up about this season, and I think after Western KY people will hold off the raves on the O Line because the Western D is so small. After we beat UCLA and it is not even close some people will want to throw credit to a more composed Crompton making all the throws, others will want to credit a superb Berry INT run back for a TD that broke the spirit of the visitors. Still others will point out that when you have the ability to run the ball every down for 4 yards you are most of the way to success. The heroes of this season will be lined up with Josh McNeil every down and they will make us proud.

What area do you think will improve most? Any areas you see slipping? Thanks for having a conversation with me and thanks for a free site that has better news than the sites I used to pay for.

OL will be the most improved imo.....the talent is there..these guys are veterans and have done it before....the system last year just messed them up

I look for them to have a year much like 2007

i agree with the OL...but something in my gut says that our DE's will have a great season. I am expecting big things out of them. Even with the loss of Ayers, I expect greater success. I think martin and walker will have some killer games, and i wouldn't be surprised to see gerald williams (even though last year we thought he was a miracle man in waiting) to ahve a really solid year. For wahtever reason, I am sensing big things out of them this year.

yeah...I definitely think OL will be most improved, however if QB plays average (C) then it will be the most improved for sure...2 full letter grades improved. But I think OL will look much better thus improving the QB play dramatically.

I just think the DE's will look like the old days.

I agree with you MHF...Last years offense was too hard and confusing for Clawsen to bring in all of those plays. He should have used what Cutcliff was doing and slowly incorporated his offense into the system. I also think Fulmer played a little with his offense as well.
I am ready for this year...I think we really will surprise the world and get back to playing tough Tennessee Football....I am looking forward to the days when we saw blitz packages and stunts on the D-Line that actually worked....
But all and all I want to see QB's running for their lives every game....I want to see some serious pressure from the defense this year...No more "Bend dont Break" Chavis systems.
I also want to see O-Line running down the field knocking defenders around while the run is still going..I want to see a D-End come on a blitz and our OT run him straight into the ground...Zone Blocking should be a lot more effective and Crompton will actually have a little more time to throw the ball...I really hope Crompton makes it this year...

Pretty much across the board, as you eluded to. This is a confident team, made evident by all the player interviews. Being comfortable and knowledgeable in a system does that for you apparently. I honestly think this team as a whole is going to surprise the H&ll out of some teams this year. That being said I can't wait to see how much back tracking, with the that's not what I meant statements from the press. Glad crow will be in season this fall!

GO VOLS.

The only unit that I expect to se ANY drop-off is the LBs; but with better DL play, that may be covered up some. We look stronger everywhere else. As to which will be the MOST improved, first you must determine which group has the most room for improvement. QB seems to be the popular choice, given the horrendous play and the high profile of the position; but IMO the with the worst play (and therefore the most room for improvement) was the OL. If they move up to average in both run blocking and pass blocking, which I bevieve they will, our offense will be able to score enough points to allow our defense to carry the day.

OL and QB are obvious choices.

Im gonna go with DL, and coach O. We were fair at DL last yr. Lookin for a big year from the ends, and DT should be deeper, and better.

Well, since me and 10 of my friends could probably play better special teams than the past few UT squads, I sure hope we are better there.

I think the lines (both sides of the ball) will surprise some people. We have the hosses...now we have the fire to turn them into ball-players. As an added benefit, improved OL play will likely give JC some time in the pocket to make a simplified gameplan work.

Big questions remain at receiver and linebacker, though.

I think the offensive line will be the most improved this season which should open up the running game. And when that happens we sink there defense in and then go over the top with a big pass.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the Tennessee defense will be as good in 2009 as last year. The vols lose some key players from the rock solid 2009 unit, and the ones coming back had to learn a new scheme in the off season. I know defensive schemes are easier to pick up than offensive schemes, but still, after having Chavis for all these years, the switch to an NFL scheme might be difficult. That and I'm not sure how Monte Kiffin is going to react having been in the NFL game for so long now. The personnel on hand is a lot less talented than what he's had the last 2 decades in the NFL.

Special teams can only get better under new management. The Vols have allowed 6 ST TD's in the last 3 years, which is pretty bad. 5 of those were PR TD's.

The offense will be better than last year. No question. Simplified schemes always make talented players look better, because there is less thought and more reaction. The only question right now is if the Vols will be healthy enough at key positions to be effective.

I think we get more QB pressure from the DE spot this year. I also expect offensive improvement...but it really couldn't get any worse.

IMO, I think the over all scheme/gameplan will be an improvement. The players themselves have all but said the Clawfence was nearly impossible to implement in a years time, and this new system is much more player friendly, and that they can do much more within it. OL play and QB play will improve within this new system. Crompton probably won't set the world on fire, but I believe there will be a definite improvement. We're not going to be worse, but how much better?...... we shall see in 46 days. GO VOLS
