And gave his approval per Chris Mortensen, ESPN. Also, Mort confirmed the elder Kiffin is on board.

Saw that too...his confirmation of Monte is a big deal. Saying Peyton "signed off" on the Kiffin hire was interesting...

Live on ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown Chris Mortenson just reported that Monte Kiffin will join Tennessee at the end of the season and will be the Defensive Coordinator!

I would have to believe this one since Mortenson is correct on his reports about 97% of the time!

i dont know that i agree with this. I dont really know much about monte kiffin but from what i have read, he seems like a very good defensive coach. That being said, after watching this season, i am not really convinced that we need or want a new defensive coach. The defense was good this year... if aint broke.. dont fix it.

You would also have to believe it because Kiffin has Mortenson on his speed dial, apparently. How many stories about Kiffin have been broken by Mortenson in the past 4 months? All of them?

It is what it is. Chavis is Fulmer's guy. I agree seems unfair, but who would you rather have, a proven, very good DC who has very strong ties to the outgoing coach, or your Dad, who happens to be one of the great defensive minds of all time?

It's good.

Chief will do well for himself.

Thanks, Chief!

This is true. Mort is probably one the best sources for ESPN. It's hard to dispute this. This will bring a lot of credability to the new staff with his addition!

Why would we have to have Peyton sign off on anything?

They don't. But the powers that be did, or at least asked. The more NFL players they ask the better, IMHO. Lane's resume isn't exactly extensive.

Also, Peyton's stamp of approval will help sellnig Lane to a large group of TN fans. Like it or not.

The only problem is I don't think Chavis was planning on staying anyway. With Fulmer leaving I think it's a case of loyalty and not wanting to coach with anyone else at UT but Fulmer.
