Quick Note on Morley and Kiffin's Visit
The start of the semester always has its share of rumors and gossip about who will be back and who won't.
With the news that cornerback Brent Vinson came out on top with his latest round of academic issues, it appears that UT should have just about everyone back on board for spring practice.
Despite the chatter about something possibly happening with safety Demetrice Morley, he is enrolled and currently in good academic standing. Apparently, Morley had a hold placed on his schedule because of unpaid fees, like a parking ticket, which could be where the rumors originated. The situation has been taken care of, and Morley should be around for spring practice.
(As a former UT student who didn't always obey the parking rules, I'm pretty familiar with that.)
I'm told offensive lineman Ramone Johnson remains on the team at least for the time being, although there may be something going on there. Remember, Johnson was suspended for poor academic effort and a violation of team rules at the same time as Darius Myers, who was never reinstated and is not a member of the team.
Also, it seems like Lane Kiffin is laying down the law early. Thursday, he delayed his return to the recruiting trail in order to surprise a few of his players in class, superstar safety Eric Berry and defensive back Daryl Vereen among them.
I'm betting UT's previous staff did something like this in the past, whether it was Phillip Fulmer or a member of the support staff. But having Kiffin show up for a few 8 a.m. classes (albeit the first day of Tuesday/Thursday classes which are just about the only un-cuttable day of the entire semester) sends a few clear messages.
First, it means that he's paying more than lip service to academics. As we've seen in the past with guys like Morley, Vinson and a slew of players ineligible for last year's Outback Bowl, it's good to be proactive.
Second, a visit to Berry's class is pretty important, too.
Not only is Berry the Vols' biggest star, he's also a leader. By showing up in his class Thursday morning, it signals that stars likely won't get special treatment under Kiffin and it's a pretty good sign that leaders must do so by example.
All told, Kiffin spent about three hours dropping in on classes before heading back out to recruit. I'm sure he could have visited a few prospects during that window. If Thursday's message hits home, it sure would be time well spent.
