I've been thinking all day about this SECCG and what the result will mean for the VOL football program and in my opinion there is more than just the SEC title on the line this time around for my VOLS alot more.
IMO the VOL football program has come to the crossroads when kickoff comes Sat. A win may just breathe new life into the coaches, players and the fanbase of a Vol program that in my mind is wavering between being a true "feared and respected power" again every game no matter the opponent or falling into the " yeah they're okay category of CFB teams. A win will without question reap rewards in recruiting and be a great springboard for the bowl game, spring practice and the 08' season. Will a win guarantee more success in the near future? No, but it will damn sure help the cause.
On the other hand a loss will result in nothing more than another monumental disappointment of a season, there will be no moral victory for just making it there, no rewards in recruiting that always follow the SEC champion, no confidence and momentum for the future just another missed opportunity at maybe getting back to being in the elite of the CFB world. Will a loss guarantee a near future of struggling to keep pace with the best? No, but it damn well won't help the cause.
IMO when the final whistle blows Sat. in Atlanta we will know more about the near future of our beloved VOL football program whether it be good or bad.
This BIG ORANGE team was left for dead after the Bama beatdown but they picked themselves up off the mat and got back in the fight, it's time to finish the deal !!!

GO BIG ORANGE !!! BEAT LSU AND BRING THE SEC TITLE BACK TO THE HILL WHERE IT BELONGS !!!

It is a historically significant event... no question about it!

That's why I've been posting like a bandit lately. Heck, I've been promoted twice here (I think) in less than a month!

Go VOLS!

Speaking of promotions on the VolNation board, why do I have the same rank as LG who has 7K posts? Do I have to get over 10K for any additional recognition here or what?

I fear if we don't win Saturday UT could go 12-15 years without a SEC championship.

Getting to this game has bought Fulmer a few more years.

It has bought him another couple of years.

However, I don't think this is UT's only shot at a SEC championship in the next 4-6 years.

if LG rooted for the right team, he'dve prob made guru a hundred years ago.

I think Phil is here another 2-3 and I don't like his chances in those years against - Meyer, Richt, Saban...etc.

Whoever comes in after him might have a mess to clean up so might not see one in the near future.

I agree with that. I don't even think this year is our best chance considering the youth we have now. I don't think these other coaches are all they're built up to be either (CUM lost 3 SEC games in two out of his first three years; CPF has figured CMR out; and CNS was a bust in Miami and just may not have stuck around LSU long enough on the first round to be added to the solved list).

In my mind, Spurrier was the most worthy of fear, but USCe is not UF. If for some weird reason he ended up at LSU, then I'll start fearing other SEC coaches again.

I agree Joey and have thought the same thing.

And even though I support Fulmer, see signs of progress, and am hopeful that he will finish the turnaround... THERE IS NO WAY ON EARTH HE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A COMPENSATION CHANGE OR EXTENSION UNTIL AFTER THE NEXT TWO GAMES

Again I like and support him... but he isn't out of the woods by a long, long shot. Especially the extension but even a salary increase will just make it more difficult to take action if things take a turn for the worse.

I dont know.. Getting to the game has probably saved his job for next year. However I would say if he looses this game (especially if it happen like the alabama game).. Then there would be tremendous pressure on him to turn it around next year. This program just cant handle another embarasing loss this year IMO.

Agreed, but it is the only one that is there for the taking right now, and IMO at a crucial time for the program....we need this one.

You're absolutely right, we need this one!

Getting it will make it that much easier to recruit and stack the cards even further in our favor in the coming years!

Go Vols! Beat the stripes off those Tigers!

This is a big game for us, no doubt. We lose and nothing will have really changed... still no meaningful championships (SEC, NC), no BCS bowl appearances, and another ho-hum 9-4 ish record.

We win and it restablishes Tennessee as a national power, the fan base is ecstatic because we have something to brag about again.

I'm not negative about our chances to compete for the SEC title again next year... but its so tough... we have to capitalize on one of these trips to Atlanta, its time.

I'm sure I feel like a lot of UT fans and I still feel like the 2001 SEC CG was a turning point in the program, and it seems like the program hasn't quite regained that height in the SEC. (The only other sports punch in the gut I can compare it to, for me, is Jim Leyritz's home run off of Mark Wohlers in Game 3 of the 1996 World Series that sent two franchises in very different directions for the next decades. I still get sick thinking about that shot.) Of course, the talent in the SEC is much more spread out than it used to be, both on the field and in the coaching area, and none of the current Vols were on the 2001 team, so it probably isn't even a factor in their minds. But, to the fans, I think it would feel like the program has finally come full circle and is back to where we know it's capable of being. That's probably not fair, and I may be putting too much stock in one game, but I will say it will make for a much more optimistic offseason if the Vols are SEC champs than if they aren't.

For all the faults to put on Fulmer, you can not be serious about Richt? Fulmer's team has pasted them solidly two years in a row.

There is nothing like a Championship game to get you fired up. Whether its making the 2000 mile trek to the desert in 98 or the last trek I made to the ga dome in 01. Its all really surreal. I just hope I have the jubliant feeling I had after the Fiesta Bowl rather than the crushing feeling I had after the heartbreaker the last time we faced the corndogs in the SEC Championship. I think we can do it!!!! TOGETHER WE WILL!!!

GO VOLS!!!!!!

Meyer put a beatdown on Fulmer that is equivalent to a 2 game beatdown. So by your rationale we don't need to even consider beating UF again?
