Class is in session
03-02-2009 10:14 a.m.

The Trojan coaching staff will be learning from a guest lecturer today.

Monte Kiffin, considered one of the brightest defensive minds in football history and currently Tennessee’s first-year defensive coordinator, will be in staff meetings today as the USC coaches on both sides of the ball hope to learn from the football savant.

“I’m just here to talk a little ball,” the 69-year-old Kiffin said.

Coach Carroll and Kiffin are longtime friends, having coached on the same staff for a total of 10 years over five different stops during their careers.

“He’s the wisest defensive guy I’ve ever been around,” Carroll said of Kiffin. “He no doubt knows what he’s talking about.”

He gets paid to do this stuff all the time. I bet it was under contract for a while.
If not then I have no clue what he's doing...
But this continues to showhow valuable it is to have him on staff for TN, not just a guest lecture. WE get him mostly 24/7.

Wow, already made his way into enemy camps. He is prob just serving him notice that UT is the next super power of college football so they can start look for new jobs.

Let's see. Our HC and DL/RC are descendents of PC. Not a huge surprise that we are collaborating with them. I wouldn't be surprised to see them return the favor.

Interesting. USC is a perennial powerhouse on defense every year, yet they are listening to advice from Monte. Just goes to show you what kind of coach we have. THE best defensive mind in the game. Can't wait until the fall.

Doesn't bother me just because we don't play them year in year out (yet). If he was in Gainesville that'd be a completely different story.

The guest lecture is cool by me.

But the USC colors? C'mon man, I like coaches that bleed orange like Pearl and Summitt!

Yeah, coaches do visit other coaches all the time, but most do not wear the colors of the team they are visiting. I have no problem with him visiting, but the colors is what got my attention.

Well, there's a possibility that the white shirt underneath is a UT polo, but it was cold in the room. All that was around was a USC windbreaker.

It's called respect for his knowledge. I don't think we really grasp what kind of coaching mind we have on staff!

Nothing to see here. A non-event. Fer cryin' out loud, Monte gave up a million or so to be with his son. He's not gonna' bail for anyone while CLK is at TN.

Look, if Coach Saban were invited to speak at a Vol seminar (yeah, I know.. but stay with me), and attended the seminar wearing an orange windbreaker, I'd yawn. Nothing to it.

As I recall, Coach Saban wore a purple tie for his first Bama press conference. He was ribbed about it, but that's it.

Well Monte isn't us. He's been a Vol for roughly 2 months. His blood probably still bleeds red. I doubt it has fully changed to Orange...
I thought they did blood transfusions during the contract signing?

Or it could have been a gift from Carroll for speaking, and Monte was polite and wore it for a photo op, or just in general.

Lots of scenarios.
