Trojans' Corp is No. 2 at QB - LA Daily News

USC freshman Aaron Corp will officially be the Trojans' No. 2 quarterback ahead of sophomore Mitch Mustain for Saturday's season opener against Virginia.
"If we played tonight, Aaron would go first," offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said. "But that doesn't mean (the competition is) over. They both worked extremely hard."
Sarkisian said Corp has improved dramatically since spring practice.
"They both played well and have a ways to go, but Aaron really progressed," Sarkisian said. "He's extremely mobile and has done a nice job with the deep ball. Is he perfect? No. He still needs to learn some things with game management."
Asked about the fact Mustain went 8-0 at Arkansas with an extra year's experience, Sarkisian said, "The thing to remember about Arkansas was that it was a different system."
Corp will play Saturday if anything happens to starter Mark Sanchez or if Sanchez needs a break. Sarkisian said he would closely monitor Sanchez to see if conditioning becomes an issue during the game because Sanchez missed several weeks with a dislocated kneecap.
"I don't want that to happen, but if we get pushed to that point, we have to do what we have to do," Sarkisian said.
Sanchez threw two interceptions during Tuesday's practice in the scrimmage portion, which was not exactly a confidence boost going into the Virginia game.
"There's a little bit of rust in there," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "We need to make
sure we clean things up and protect him." Carroll said he did not view the interceptions as understandable following Sanchez's prolonged absence.
"We don't ever want stuff like that to happen and then brush it off," Carroll said.
Sanchez downplayed the interceptions by safety Kevin Ellison and defensive end Malik Jackson because he was more excited to practice full-speed with no problem.
"I was bummed, but they made great plays," he said. "If I'm not thinking about my knee, I don't want to think about interceptions."
Team doctor James Tibone cleared Sanchez on Tuesday night, the final step before he officially starts against Virginia.
"He can run, he can cut," Tibone said. "I was surprised how well he did last week."

Should have gone to Tulsa with High School Gus. I guess Momma Mustain is learning the hard way that the SC coaches don't care how short she wears her skirts. They actually make players earn their time on the field.

had to look the kid up and I actually knew where that HS was in Cali. One of my good friends from UT went to the same HS. Sorry for the off-topic post just found it funny

I hear UCLA is looking for a QB and he could probably transfer without moving

funny...because if Mustain stayed at Arkansas he'd be considered a "Heisman Hopeful" and Mallett wouldn't be at Arkansas

Mustain is going to be 30 by the time he gets any time starting at QB in college. One dumb decision after another by this guy.

yup. kind of delusional for him to think he'd beat out 3 other HS all americans. i've heard mustain's problem has been reading the defense. apparently if his first guy isn't open he flusters.

Well USC is known as QBU... This is not good especially since petrino really could have used him this year. Unfortunate but understandable with the competition that they have....

It would be interesting to see if Mustain, could beat Corp out.
Sanchez tweaks his knee again, then Mustain could still start against OSU..

Looks like he's close to transferring again. he isn't happy!

The sophomore quarterback did not appear too happy over his newfound status as the No. 3 quarterback.
``I'm not down about it. They like how (Aaron Corp) improved in camp and made great improvement,'' Mustain said.
Asked if he spent time on the scout team this week, he said, ``If I get sent down that far, I'm in trouble.''
Asked if that would be the time to call Tulsa, where his high school coach Gus Malzahn is offensive coordinator, Mustain said, ``I don't know about that.''

If he transferred to Tulsa he wouldn't be able to play until he was a JR, right?

Or a SR, I'm confused. If he transferred right now it would be JR?

Yes. He's a redshirt sophomore right now. He'd have two years to play two seasons. He'd have to transfer within the next week though to be eligible to play in Tulsa's season opener next season.

Aaron Corp set to back up quarterback Mark Sanchez at USC - Los Angeles Times

Coaches quietly informed Corp and Mustain of their status a few days ago, but the competition will continue, Coach Pete Carroll said.

"They've been dead-even the whole time and we'll see what happens," Carroll said. "The edge that anybody would have over either one of them right now is not very significant. We just have to pick out somebody that's going to go next."

Mustain stoically cited Corp's improvement during training camp but would not concede that Corp's status was permanent.

"I certainly don't think it's set in stone," he said.

Asked whether he regretted his decision to transfer to USC, Mustain said, "No, not at all. I still have three years. That's a lot of time for a lot of things to happen."

Odds on mitch ever seeing the field at SC? 1 in 50?

What if his mom moved near Tulsa and "attempted" suicide and he moved to be closer to his mom. Even if she faked it he would have a good excuse.

I was saying if he really wanted to play somewhere else there is a way. Whether it works or not is a different story.
He can transfer to Chattanooga or Youngstown St. or Valdosta St. with little or no problem (provided they haven't started class yet).

bingo. he can transfer to 1-aa without sitting out a year. I agree he probably sticks around this year, but if next year he is behind corp (or matt barkley) look for him to transfer again.

Well, I go to Chattanooga(UTC), and classes have already started and late registration ends tomorrow, I think.

I agree. IMO - He made a good choice bygetting as far away from Arkansas as he possible could (including his mother).

unless he manages to win the starting job at USC, it was a horrible choice to leave Arkansas, or rather it was horrible choice to transfer to USC.
