I recently helped choose and install this television for my father-in-law. It is amazing. We got lucky and found it at a Nebraska furniture mart for 3299.00. The picture is incredible.

If you are new to HDTV, let me start by explaining the 1080p resolution. Until recently, HDTV's were only available in either 1080i or 720p resolution. This means that, in the case of 720p, you are only seeing 720 lines of resolution all at once (progressive). For 1080i, you are seeing two images 540 lines of resolution each alternatly flashed which combine to form 1080 lines interlaced. While both of these provide outstanding picture quality, neither is true high definition. Most programing these days is either in 1080i or 720p so why do you need a 1080p (true HD) TV? 1080p is an advantage because either HD broadcast will look the very best that it can look on this tv. Before, 1080i broadcasts looked best on 1080i tvs and vice versa. Also, when broadcasts start in 1080p, this tv will be capable.

Bottom line, next time you are at a television store, find a 1080i or 720p tv and get right up to it. You can see the pixels. Then try the same thing with a 1080p set. No pixels, one solid full screen image. It will convince you.

So back to the mitsubishi. The most difficult part in this purchase was deciding between this tv and sony's new SXRD technology. Right away, all of the salespeople were saying that the sony had the best picture in the store. Side by side with the mitusbishi, while viewing scenery (beaches, mountains etc.) they were right. The sony was sooo bright. It was almost too much. It looked better than real life. The mitsubishi had more real life detail. But, for the scenery, the sony was better. We decided that football would be the best way to choose a tv since that is the main reason he wanted an HDTV. The minute the football came on, we all said that the mitsubishi had the best picture. The grass and uniforms etc. were all too bright on the sony. The mitsubishi had a very detailed realistic picture. Also, the sony was over 1000 dollars more.

This tv is DLP technology. Lightweight and compact. It has a built in HD tuner (all you have to do is plug in an antenna and you will be watching HDTV, assuming it is available in your area). Cable card ready. TV guide on screen menu. NetCommand. Digital camera memory card slots.

Inputs: 2 antenna inputs, 2 A/V inputs, 3 component video inputs, one DVI input, two HDMI inputs, 2 IEEE firewire inputs

the firewire inputs allow you to easily connect a digital video camera or pc with one wire. the HDMI inputs carry digital audio and video on one cable and will allow you to connect a pc to use the tv as a monitor. You can even use the built in TV guide and your computer's hard drive to record shows without paying a monthly fee. (similar to tivo) I can't say how well this works because we don't have a pc connected to do this.

NetCommand is a feature on mitsubishi tvs which allows you to control all of your components with just your tv remote. It also takes steps out of your setup. For example, say you want to watch a DVD. Just go to the on screen menu, select DVD and the tv will turn your surround sound receiver to DVD sound and it will also turn your DVD player on and now you can use the tv remote to control the DVD player. When the movie is over, select tv and everything goes back to settings needed to watch tv. It works through little IR emitters which you place in front of your components. We've had it hooked up for a week and it works properly about %95 of the time. Every now and then we will have to turn on a component to get everything in sync.

Ease of use: Without NetCommand its as easy as any other tv to set up and use. With NetCommand, it is a little confusing at first but once you understand how it works and get it set up, it is much more convenient.

Sound: ? we hooked up surround sound immediately. I have never heard this tv.

My father-in-law loves his new tv. I already have a mitsubishi 65in. rear projection 1080i tv and I am jealous. The true testament however, is that my mother-in-law also loves this tv. Very satisfied customers!

Looks like a great set. However, be advised this set appears to not accept 1080p signals execpt over firewire or antenna connection (no 1080p through component or HMDI connections). There's currently no 1080p programming available and early impressions from HDTV enthusiasts suggest 1080p isn't that much of a jump and barely noticable on screen 50" or smaller. For the most part, an upscaled 720p or 1080i into 1080p is going to look very nice.

Just some food for thought. Supposedly, the 927 series will accept 1080p signals via HDMI or component.

Might want to look for a 628 model. Supposedly it has better blacks.

Out of all the 1080p DLPs right now, the generally concensous is that the Toshiba 1080p units are the best looking. Not saying others like this Mits are bad by any means, though.

Sweet. Glad to hear it's working out for you. I've got a 50" DLP myself and have loved it since the day I got it.

This is something I've noticed a lot... Is it a regional thing? I have not met a single person with a big HDTV around here... We've got a basic 32" Sony tv in our living room, and my friends come over to my house to play XBox on it. However, my folks in the midwest and the south all have huge TV's in the living room.

As far as the 1080p, I understand the PlayStation 3 will be fully in 1080p when it comes out.

They claim it's 1080p "capable." There is absolutely no way any of the blockbuster games will be rendered in 1080p at least for the first year or two. You might see some simple puzzle games, etc in 1080p, but nothing like Splinter Cell, GTA, etc will be rendered at 1080p. 2 main reasons: It's a ton of work for a very, very small number of their consumers and secondly the hardware will be hard pressed to render 1080i/720p in graphic intensive games. Trying to get it to output 1080p with any sort of decent framerate will be very difficult and time consuming. I'll go out on a limb and say less than a handful of games are actually rendered at 1080p during the PS3's lifespan. Upscaling is what will happen.

There's only a dozen or two TVs out there right now that can accept 1080p. As noted above, that great Mits. 1080p tv Smokey bought only accepts 1080p inputs over firewire and antenna, not component, HDMI, or DVI.

I woudn't invest this kind of money in a current technology TV. I firmly believe this. I have a 32" Samsung CRT HDTV... after spending time at home and playing my xbox on my dad's 52" rear projection, and even theyr new 27" LCD for the bedroom... neither compare to my CRT in terms pf brightness and quality of picture. A DLP will be somewhat better than my dad's old rear projection, however, it still isn't a CRT. My next TV will either be an SED TV, or OLED set... SED is due to debut this year, OLED is still a few years away.

Teamxbox recently released a pretty decent article that explains different TV technology for those that don't know...
