Minority Coaches

I heard John Brice from Volquest on the Sports Monster and he said he thought it was very important that Kiffin hired a couple of black coaches, and was concerned that he hadn't. I personally don't care as long as they can coach, so don't shoot the messenger.:)

From John Brice on Volquest:

We are continuing to work the completion of Tennessee's staff, and it appears more and more likely that Frank Wilson will join the staff as the Vols' wide receivers coach as first noted earlier today. A name we hear pretty strongly to complete the defensive staff is Willie Mack Garza, who recently was hired at New Mexico but was not officially introduced there. Garza is a former Texas player who has coached at TCU and most recently was defensive coordinator at North Dakota State.

I'm excited about these two. Garza played at Texas in the early 90's and is thought of to be well connected there. And Wilson worked for Coach O at Ole Miss. He's supposedly a great recruiter. He was also formally the recruiting coord. at Southern Miss.

You guys shoot down the OP, but having staff diversity is important. Say what you want, but having an all white staff at a southern school doesn't look good to anyone on the outside.

well since UT was the 1st school to start a black QB. i think we get a pass on this. plus, all racial issues are old. we have Hussein Obama as our new president. so all the race stuff should be over now.

let me elaborate...I could care less if our staff was all white or all black or whatever...I don't care what anybody thinks about me, but it's completely different for the university to get a black eye from some agenda driven journalist just trying to stir up some career advancing drama about a school that he's never been to and knows nothing about. I want the best for the university, and if that's having an all white staff then so be it...I just wish our country wasn't so race driven and put so much emphasis on racism especially when it isn't even present.

I agree with everything you're saying. I don't care about what color they are either, but the BCA would make a fuss about an all white staff...and I just don't want that kind of negative press.

I did a google images search today (before reading this post) to answer this question and both Wilson and Garza are african-american.

Oh yeah, that gives us a pass forever. Sure buddy...nice analysis.

Also:
1) Referring to the president-elect as "Hussein Obama" is about the least clever way imaginable of expressing your disdain for the man.
2) Because we will shortly have a black president that means that "all racial issues are old"? Did you really just write that? Was it meant to be a serious statement?

That's a very, very naive way of thinking. There are still race issues in our country, no matter who is President.

My source is telling me that Jon Gruden was fired. Is he black? If so, we should hire him. Director of operations or something.

I'm more concerned that we may see a backlash from the American Indians for firing the only Indian coach in organized football in John Chavis...

I mean we got an improvement with Monte, but is it worth all the teepees that will be put up in protest around Neyland?

I was interviewed for the job. But, I was "over qualified." But, I know it was my long hair.

well CLK hired two but they were two of the last hired therefore it obviously was not a priority so the conclusion is racism.

note: heavy dose of sarcasm, but i would not be surprised to see a statement similar to the above in the media.

Could it not be called a form of racism to hire someone just because they were an African-American?
