If we hire a coach with pro expeirience like Kiffin, Nolan, then our recruiting class won't take too big of a hit. Nolan i think would be a good hire. Can he recruit though?

Wack! He needs his own thread. Hell, Lane Kiffen has like 10.

Sidenote - This thread was a complete joke.

If we get the right coach, it won't hurt our recruiting class at all. Most of them will still want to come here and play for a better coach and tons of new blood/excitement around the program.

Incorrect. Most of these recruits are coming for the stable, family atmosphere that UT provides. The rest are coming because of the new coaching staff. If Fulmer gets replaced by someone other than Clawson, you can kiss most of those recruits goodbye. Certainly the most hyped recruits will look elsewhere.

Let me guess. You know all of our recruits personally through facebook and myspace?

If recruits want to play for a staff that hasn't produced anything in a decade, don't let the door hit them on their way out.

It depends on who we hire. How many recruits do you think reneged on the offer from Shula when Saban was named coach? I suspect that there were Shula offers that he pulled because they did not measure up to his standards. I also suspect there were commitments to other schools that changed their commitment to Bama.

It does not have to be Doom and Gloom.

Exactly! How'd you guess? Follow recruiting and player comments on why they are attending UT. Every one of them says that they have a personal relationship with a specific coach or just like the family atmosphere in general. Then look at previous recruiting classes at schools where the coach left in the middle or at the end of the season. The odds of us landing a good recruiting class in that situation are very slim. Having the next HC already hired and announcing him quickly helps in recruiting but a new HC is still only going to have a couple of months to make connections(this would be especially difficult for a coach coming from the NFL). It's not guaranteed that we lose most of our recruits in this situation but it's a pretty safe bet. Then again, you should already know this.

Saban was previously an SEC coach who won a NC and had only spent one year in the NFL. Shula wasn't on his level as a coach. UT will be getting rid of a coach who is beloved by college players. There is little shot that we get a new HC who is as far above Fulmer as Saban was Shula. The national perception of Fulmer has only recently caught up to the internal view of Fulmer. We definitely will not be hiring a coach with a better record or more NC's than Fulmer. We also will lose a young offensive staff who is responsible for a lot of our recruits. Stability is a key for these kids and their families. Just look at how Michigan's recruiting class looked after they replaced Carr with Rich Rod.

I somewhat agree but I think we are putting too much emphasis on players only going to schools where they can win titles. We see great recruits going to schools we wouldn't expect every year. A good portion of these kids want to enjoy their college experience more than they want to win a NC. Most major contributors in college will not go pro so the atmosphere/academics are important to them. I don't think any less of a recruit who wants to come play for Fulmer whether he has met yours or my standards. Fulmer is a great man and a fatherly figure. He also has a great track record of getting people in the pros. There's no shame in playing for a coach like Fulmer. For us it's only about championships but these kids are worried about a lot more than that.

How depressing........UTK must be the only school in the land with a football staff that generates a 'family atmosphere', and it looks like Fulmer is the best coach ever by default.

Well, for my part, if I have to choose between (a) getting a Rivals Top 10 / 20 / 25 recruiting class that produces 8 win seasons over their college career, mixed in with a 5 or 6 win season, or...
(b) starting over with a new coaching staff with promise...

...I have 10 years of (a). I'm ready to try (b).

We already know what happened with (a).

If you're gonna compare Michigan to UT, then send an e-mail to Phil telling him how to leave with his dignity intact.

After Saturday, he might need that advice.

go vols.

You stated even with the right hire we'd lose most of our recruits. Now you're saying all this about Saban... Also, Saban was in the NFL two years.
