That really shows the credentials of Butch's staff.

Mike Canales was the QB coach at a major SEC school last year. When he and the whole staff got fired, he's the OC/QB coach at the worst program in FBS.

Dude was the freaking RBs coach for North Texas befor Botch thought he would make a good QB coach at UT.

Not sticking up for Canales or Butch, but Canales was a 3 year starting QB at Utah State and has coached QBs in some fashion for the majority of his career so I can see why he was hired as a QB coach.

Eh, I think the only reason Butch hired him is because he knew him. Canales did nit possess the resume to ever be hired at TN.

Butch hired particular guys to be his escape goats.

It was always going to be his “Offense” “Philosophy”, no matter who was coaching what.

Dooley had better coaches and was a actual coach compared to Butch. Really look at the coaches we had under Dooley. Remarkable, if he hadn't of tried to change to a 3-4 when he was on the hot seat then we may have been spared of Butch. I remember thinking out of all the coaches we hired the one coach Dooley beat to replace him.
Yeah, Dooley coached a heck of a shower regiment. Lol. I had to do it.

Dooley brought us our first back to back losing seasons in 100 years, he ended up with 3 straight. He couldn’t even manage a winning season with NFL talent all over the offense. Bray, Hunter, CP, Rivera, D Thomas, James, Stone, Fulton, Tiny Richardson, Croom. Even Neal had 1,000 season a year later and was picked up after the draft. He’s worse of a coach than Butch and it’s not close. He’s of if not the worst coach in Tennessee history.

Classy statement from Canales. I hope he's able to move past the stink of Butch Jones and have a great career. With that said, I hope we stomp his offense into the ground Saturday. It's nothing against the guy. Call it revenge by association.

Lol. Botch Jones lost to Vandy when he had Dobbs, Kamara, Malone, Wolfe, Croom, and Barnett. Dooley>Botch.

Because he makes it appear that a job as OC at UTEP is some low level job. How arrogant.
It is a low-level job within his "industry" (FBS-level college football). It isn't about being arrogant. It's just a fact. Look at the jobs he held and the places he coached before and after he came to Tennessee. The fact he was at Tennessee really stands out on that resume.

The job I hold is irrelevant. It's actually a position at the leading provider at what I do for a living, but whatever.

Tennessee is a big time football program. When the program is humming, it competes for/wins national titles. It deserves and demands big time assistant coaches - assistant coaches who go on to become head coaches somewhere else. Before Tennessee, Canales was a position coach at Utah St. Before that, he held a variety of assistant positions at North Texas. The only remotely "big time" job he held was OC at Arizona in 2004-05. Let's be real - Butch never had an A+ staff while he was here, to put it mildly. Especially in his last couple years. Harsh, but true.

I know, but it shows how in demand he was. Did some big P5 school or good mid-major pick him up? No. The only reason he sniffed the UT campus as a QB coach was because he had a prior relationship with Butch and was out of a job.

"My job is irrelevant, but I'm going to validate myself to you anyway."
--05_never_again, probably.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

I would love to see an in-depth report on why the coaches were so poor. Was the administration holding back the salarys? Did good coaches avoid Butch? Did Butch take recruiters over developers? Would Butch not recognize a good coach if if he saw one? We can all guess but I want facts, backed up by statments made by those involved.

I see where you're coming from. But, based on what we know, would DD have done well with a mobile QB? Would he have recruited the other guys you mentioned? I think Botch would have been even worse if he had come in when Dools did. Then again, I think the same thing if the timing were reversed. Lyle followed by DD would have been even more awful and left the cupboard more bare. They both suck!!! Picking the better coach between them is like choosing the better potato to cut diamonds with.

Please don't say Rutgers. I may be a Vols fan but I live in South Jersey and follow the Rutgers program and I certainly don't want to see Butch Jones face in the local papers and on T.V. as the HC at Rutgers. He can go to Kansas or some other school that doesn't care about football.
Well, you live in New Jersey so you deserve it
