Dooley had better coaches and was a actual coach compared to Butch. Really look at the coaches we had under Dooley. Remarkable, if he hadn't of tried to change to a 3-4 when he was on the hot seat then we may have been spared of Butch. I remember thinking out of all the coaches we hired the one coach Dooley beat to replace him.

I wonder how many promotions Butch would have gotten in his career without Bajakian, Elder, and even John Jancek on his original staff? I thought Bajakian and Elder were good coaches. Jancek wasn't horrible either. He did a better job with the defense than his replacement.

To even put graham in CBJ's tree is a bit of a stretch he was only there for about an hour and a half. Also Elder & Bajakian were actually with him for a while they just got out once he got to big boy ball.

CBJ may really be awful but I am willing to bet someone (Mid-Major or Rutgers) will give him another chance.

The guy shows pure class while you show pure crass. Embarrassing for all Vol fans. I bet the job he has now is 1000 X better than any position you've held.

Please don't say Rutgers. I may be a Vols fan but I live in South Jersey and follow the Rutgers program and I certainly don't want to see Butch Jones face in the local papers and on T.V. as the HC at Rutgers. He can go to Kansas or some other school that doesn't care about football.

It's a new a coaching staff. They didn't have any part in turning UTEP into the worst FBS program any more than Pruitt is responsible for the Butch Jones years.

Canales is a good guy. I actually think he was one of the more competent coaches we had on staff last season. Consider the s@#$show at O-line, lack of WRs, and the fact that he was basically the first "real coaching" JG and Dormady ever had. Don't forget, Butch somehow forgot to hire a dedicated QB coach for two years after Bajakian left, which is why all our QBs seemed poorly developed. Canales was really the first one to actually teach JG some fundamentals; without that, we'd be in even worse shape right now.

Out of Butch's offensive staff hires last season, Canales is the one that I think worked out OK. The others were disasters.

I don't think Butch was a likeable guy among the coaches he hired. He might've been oblivious that some of the coaches came here just as a stepping stone for their career or build up their resume. NOT because they liked Butch... more because Tennessee is just a great school. Almost everyone on his staff was able to get another job. Butch? He had to beg Alabama/Saban. haha!

Bajakian - Left to NFL
Elder - Left to become HC
Gillespie - Probably best HIRE of Butch's career. NC
Azzanni - Left to NFL after Butch didn't give him the OC job
Jancek - Forced out? but now DC at Colorado St.
Martinez - Old pal who stayed on forever till 2016 season. Now at UCF.
Strippling - Old pal who stayed the entire time with Butch and may have left till 2016 too? Now at Cincy
Mahoney - Old pal who should've been fired earlier...even he has a job at ECU.
Thigpen - Probably 2nd best hire who is now at NC.
DeBord - Butch's old mentor. Good hire but he left Butch in the dust to be Indiana's OC.
Shoop - Mediocre hire? But now at Miss. State with his pal as the DC
Scott - Came from Miami and probably should've never been promoted to OC. Now he's FL TE coach.
Hoke - 1 year stint who needed TN for a boost. Now he's in NFL
Canales - 1 year stint who need TN for a boost. He's now at UTEP as OC.
Warren - 1 year stint who probably regrets Butch. Now at FL secondary coach.
Beard - 1 year sting who needed a boost. Now a recruiting coordinator for Toledo.
Wells - Promoted to OL but hired in 2016. Now at ?????

The job I hold is irrelevant. It's actually a position at the leading provider at what I do for a living, but whatever.

Tennessee is a big time football program. When the program is humming, it competes for/wins national titles. It deserves and demands big time assistant coaches - assistant coaches who go on to become head coaches somewhere else. Before Tennessee, Canales was a position coach at Utah St. Before that, he held a variety of assistant positions at North Texas. The only remotely "big time" job he held was OC at Arizona in 2004-05. Let's be real - Butch never had an A+ staff while he was here, to put it mildly. Especially in his last couple years. Harsh, but true.

I know, but it shows how in demand he was. Did some big P5 school or good mid-major pick him up? No. The only reason he sniffed the UT campus as a QB coach was because he had a prior relationship with Butch and was out of a job.

Yeah, but he actually got a promotion. He's the OC at UTEP.

I wouldn't say he was a poor hire, so much as an odd hire. All the other Butch hires were hired because of their recruiting ability and not coaching. Beard was a terrible WR coach but he had Miami connections. Wells was a terrible OL coach hire, but he also had Florida recruiting connections. Larry Scott is an OK position coach, but he was also brought in more because of his recruiting ties in Florida. Butch consistently put recruiting ties over coaching acumen and it cost us over time.

Canales was the one who can actually coach, but is a poor recruiter. That's the real reason he hasn't coached much at P5 schools. Also why he was sort of an odd Butch hire. You're right ... he was probably only hired because he knew Butch well, but he's actually a good position coach.

He went from QB coach at one of the premier programs in CFB (and only because the HC at the time knew him) to calling plays and coaching QBs at the worst program in FBS. I bet he took a pay cut and has more responsibility than he had before, and he's at an anonymous college football wasteland. If that's a promotion, I wouldn't want it.

Almost every single Butch assistant went to a lesser job. That says a lot.

And don’t forget, he was the running backs coach at mighty Utah State before becoming our QB coach. Good dude, just not an SEC level coach.

Well then Butch failed there so well because hiring guys to recruit didnt work out in the end for him. We have no talent left. It was also ignorant if Butch to focus so hard on Florida. Even when TN was rolling, with one of the best recruiters college football has ever had in Fulmer, we didn't put a ton of marbles on Florida.

I respect Canales and what he had to say about Tennessee, but it sounds a little like a coach that is making sure that bridge didn’t burn down behind him. JMO

That would be Dooley who skipped OL for one recruiting class and went skimpy on 2 others.
