Came into my store in Chattanooga. Now I feel bad for being so critical of his game-calling at times. Hes a super nice, down to earth guy that loves the Vols. He bought an Eric Berry Kansas City player-tee. Said that he loves Dooley more every day. I asked him if he liked him more than Kiffin with a smirk on my face and he replied, "That's an understatment."

Bobby gettin' a little love! Seriously...I've never understood why people claim to personally hate the man. Sure, sometimes his broadcasts leave something to be desired but...

Ole Bob fumbles verbally every so often, but he's not nearly as bad as some make him out to be. John Ward had his share of gaffes too.

I can't stand him as an announcer.

Sorry to ruin the thread, though. I've saw him in person a couple of times and he seems like a pretty good guy.

He seems pretty genuine. I just can't help but cringe when he says the wrong name/number. Esp when that player wasn't even anywhere near the play. But saying that it is good to have someone with so much love for the vols. I'm sure I'd totally f it up if I was announcing it too. ha.

You know, I think he does a fair job. After replacing a legend you are always going to be a little disappointed. I mean, who calls plays for the cubbies now a days, I am not even sure but I think we all knew Harry Carey for sure. Point is I like him.

I am a fan. Got no problem with him at all.

Thanks to OP for the story. I like what he said when you asked him CDD.

We ran into him at the Elite 8 out in the streets of St. Louis and talked to him for a couple of minutes. Super nice down to earth guy. It was gonna be hard for anyone to take Ward's place but he's not my favorite either.

I think hes a halfway decent announcer. I think we were all just spoiled by John Ward.

He is terrible at calling football. I really enjoy his basketball calls. He really is a great guy though.

I've never doubted his loyalty to the school nor his passion for the program. That doesn't mean he's good at what he does. He's not bad but I'd prefer better

I think the school should have open tryouts for everybody that thinks Kessling sucks and they could do a better job. Maybe one of them will be good enough to replace him on the mic.

I think the biggest difference between the two are the distance from the field/court. They have to use binoculars to see the players from the pressbox in Neyland compared to being right on the court in basketball. Plus there are twice as many players to keep track of. Much harder than you think.

I always get a little ticked when people take personal shots at Bob. He goofs, but I wonder if John Ward did the same the first few years.

I used to work at the parking garage at McGhee Tyson when I was just out of school. At the time, Kesling was doing the Jefferson Pilot games on Saturday afternoon. Every time he flew back in and picked up his car, he'd sit at the booth and talk about the Vols for several minutes. Can't say it enough. Great guy, cursed by following a legend.

honestly, i have no problem with bob. i'm sure he's a great guy and i think he catches alot of unnecessary flack on here sometimes. but post #21 of this thread contains the quote from him that so far i've most remembered him for. i'm glad i saw that game on the tv....especially that play in particular
