I'll start by saying this game should be fun. The atmosphere will likely feel like an Elite 8 game IMO. Memphis charged this game up with their W @ home against Bama and that's exactly what this game needed to be an exciting atmosphere. I can't wait to watch this one on National TV and hopefully the Vols come out on top. There's few teams that can really match the size Memphis plays on their frontline and the Vols are not one. Luckily Memphis has lost to plenty of teams that have a weaker front line than we play. This may be a BHH game. He's built for this. We will see soon... 8 hours from me typing this out.
Penny has realized that Emoni Bates at PG isn't the play recently after the 4 game skid... He's played Bates less and less. He's just not mature enough to compete at this level physically and mentally. Mental toughness is 75% of basketball at any level past the level where your size just means more. Memphis line up is weird at this point. I'll highlight the guys that mean the most. Dj Jefferies is gone to Miss St. From last season.
Deandre Williams is by far their best player IMO. That showed against Bama... Penny finally realized this after playing him very little during the four game losing streak. He had 20p/3r/6a against Bama and really helped them dominate the game. The 6'9 Senior can really do it all. He's going to play quite a bit from here on out. He finishes well around the rim and can pass with from all spots with efficiency and really hurt a good defensive team.
Jalen Duren a physical post that can score even better than Williams around the rim. He's very big and plays with the swagger that Penny wants (I know) Penny is thought of as bad coach among this fanbase but he's really not terrible and runs the kind of style that does plague Barnes teams. If we don't keep him off the glass it could be a long day in Nasvhille.
Landers Nolley Feels like the glue guy of this team. Will do what it takes to get the W. Luckily for us I think JJJ will guard him and I think he can help in keeping him from being the x factor. Nolley is a solid passer and pretty good 3 point shooter. I'd expect him to take some 3s today with Jo forcing him to be a shooter.
Memphis isn't better than us. Based on what we've seen up to this point. They will try and make this game a street ball game. They want to run and force help so they can throw it up to their big guys. IMO Bama plays perfectly into that style of play. I think "Barnes Ball" Isn't what Memphis will want to do. If we can execute in the half court and force Memphis to do the same we will win. Kennedy Chandler will need to be MVP of this one and I expect a Colorado style game from him as many have said Penny didn't want him. (check twitter, it's there) If Chandler plays up to top 15 pick standards there's not a doubt in my mind we win. I wouldn't expect Chandler to be dominate in attacking the rim he was in the Colorado game but to show he can run the half court sets and really help the rest of the team remain poised and run our sets. Memphis has smaller, quicker guards that I don't think will effect Chandler today. I think this will be a game he truly shows what he's made of against his hometown team.
Vol and Tiger fans will show out for this game. I expect a 50-50 split in the crowd.
Prediction: Tennessee 82 Memphis 78 Vols win a thriller in Nashville.
