Media Perception of Heupel Question

It’s odd that Missouri has been to two SEC championships more recently than we have, yet our coach gets points taken away because he’s made Tennessee more successful since he left Missouri.
Imagine if we had the luck they had by having an established good coach, combined with the 3 traditional division powers all being in flux.

Yea, those 2 plays and a FG with only 15 seconds to play vs The Gumps was probably an anomaly.
The longer Huepel's tenure here goes on, the more convinced I am that he doesn't want he "job" of head coach and what all that entails. I think deep down, he just wants to draw up plays and be a play caller. I wouldn't be surprised if when his time here does end, he goes back to being an OC and is content to finish his career that way.

We did have that luck in the 90's. LSU, Alabama, and Georgia were all in that flux. Florida was the only team back then that could hang with us.

That’s why I said division. We would’ve won the West for a decade probably given how down the Tide and LSU were.

Maybe that happens for us with stability.. Alabama, Texas, Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Arkansas, Kentucky, and LSU are all uncertain about their coaching staffs. Oklahoma was ready to gut their program this time last year.

I think that's more "corporate oil" than personal wealth from the dirt oil like Texas and Oklahoma.

It's hard to squeeze football money out of Chevron.

Edit: maybe SpongeBob could throw some money at Bama. Their fans and he have similar IQs.
Oil companies pay out TONS of money to Universities, but it's not for athletics. MIT/Berkley/Stanford/Illinois/George Mason/etc, for example, have received hundreds of millions in funding. Texas and Texas A&M continue to receive land ownership royalties, as well. They go into a PUF, but I believe profits are dispersed at a 67%/33% split between the two universities. T. Boone Pickens was famous for giving a huge amount to the Athletics Program at Oklahoma State a decade or so back so personal donations still occur, as well. Just expanding a bit on what I think you guys are alluding to.

We are a top NIL program. If it's JUST about money, why haven't we won more/recruited better under Huepel? NIL has been around for 5 years now. Why only 1 playoff appearance in 5 years? Why no conference championship appearances?
To be fair, we just got unlucky with the playoff expansion because we would have been in the 12-team playoff in 2022. We wouldn't have gone far with Joe Milton, but I think we would have won a couple of games. If things were different and Heupel had been to 2 out of the last 4 playoffs, I think his perception would be completely different. The inability to play in the SEC title game is very frustrating, because we should have gone in 2024, but we couldn't beat a 7-6 Arkansas team with our SEC POY and top-10 defense.

That is perhaps Heupel's biggest blunder

Regardless, if we aren't in the playoffs NEXT year, he needs to go. I'll give him a pass this year because of the QB situation (unless we just completely tank) but not next year and not any year after! We are Tennessee! Our aspirations aren't 8 or 9 win seasons. It's to compete for conference and national championships! It makes zero sense to hold onto a coach that we KNOW isn't going to get us to that level.

And before anyone says it, the whole "well who are you going to replace him with" argument is stupid! Not EVERY successful coach was a known quantity that everyone knew would win! Nobody knew who Dabo was. Nobody knew who Cignetti was. Kirby Smart was an unproven head coach. Who knew who Clark Lea was? Stop it with the whole "Well there's nobody out there better" argument. You don't KNOW that and we can't be too scared to try to find him!
Are Tennessee fans willing to go back through the desert? you seem to think possibly.

I suppose it's because Heupel's teams are often not prepared or motivated, typically falling flat after a break week and lackadaisical if not going full throttle. When full throttle, he's tremendous, but the team idles when not. Heupel seems to have two-speeds: Full-throttle or idle.

If it gets us closer to finding the guy that will actually win championships, absolutely!

That's some far fetched thinking, straight out of thin air

His clock management and end game coaching is abysmal.

He is not an elite coach. Could be but needs to grow.

No, my idea is that we never stop trying! Willingly keeping a coach long-term, that you KNOW isn't going to get you to a championship level, for fear of becoming less than mediocre, is not trying, it's settling!
But you don’t know that for sure. It took Dabo 7 years or something close to it. It took Kirby several years walking into a far better situation. It doesn’t always happen in the first 3-4 years. It’s unlikely Heupel wins a title but we literally have 1 title in the last 75 years so it’s just pretty unlikely period, regardless of the coach. Heupel has done some good things and had some struggles. Let’s see how these next 2 years go. I think this is a setup year for the next 2 and beyond but I hope I’m wrong and we win this year. If we’re not considerably better in 2027 or sooner, fine, let’s roll the dice.

The difference between Huepel and Dabo is that despite Dabo taking 7 years, everyone could SEE that he was building towards something! Every year that program got a little bit better. Every year you could see him stockpiling talent. I cant say that with Huepel. I dont sense that our program's trajectory is still climbing.

Provide some details of the things you and everyone else saw in Dabo that you don't see in Heupel. You don't think we are more talented across the board right now than we were in 2021? Where did you develop that "sense" that you have for evaluating a football team?

Who are the "everyone" you were talking about?

Hindsight is always 20/20. I do believe our overall talent level has certainly improved and Heupel just brought in his most talented class. We have what is supposed to be a superstar QB that should be here for a while, although who knows these days, so I don’t agree at this point.

The difference between Heupel and Dabo was Brent Venables. Venables won 3 national titles as DC. We have Jim Knowles now, so this is when we really learn what Heupel can or cannot do.
