I haven't been a regular visitor to this site, but my brother, an original GrumpyDrunk (TM) has posted many of the negative comments from this message board at our family web site. After posting such jewels as last years post that 6 games into the season, the Vols had lost 6 of their past 12 games, concluding that that was plenty of reason to fire Coach Fulmer, I reminded him that the reason we have seasons is to separate one year's performance from others, and suggested that he simply let the season play out before passing judgment. Well the season played out, and we won the SEC East, played LSU the eventual national champion much closer than their NC opponent and then went on to win our bowl game.

Not bad, but not good enough to please the Mean Ole GrumpyDrunks.

So we start the 2008 season and the GrumpyDrunks are at it again. We have a very good team that is having problems on offense. That happens. It's part of life. We play very good opponents, and if you struggle on offense, you are going to lose games. It's the SEC.

To produce a team as successful as the Vols, it takes an excellent nationwide recruiting program, and the Vol's national recruiting program is probably the most successful in the NCAA.

Now I'm not pleased with losses. But as a tournament tennis player for a number of years, I realized that my best four tournament matches were all losses in which I played highly ranked opponents, including a state champion, in very close matches. There is much more to the game than winning.

Personally I appreciate Coach Fulmer and the job he and the other coaches have done and are doing. I am appalled by the trashing of him and the team by the GrumpyDrunks who simply don't understand the complexity of SEC football. If your team has a problem, you try to fix it, and the fix may take several tries.

After graduating in 1968 I moved to Florida in 1971 and didn't follow the Vols until the 1985 season, but I've followed them very closely since then and have noticed that one of the things that makes a very good year special is the years with difficulties. I have greatly appreciated being a Vol fan since 1985, and there aren't many programs in the nation that have provided such fond memories as the Vol football program during these past 23 years.

Go Vols!

Thank you Coach Fulmer!

I have seen the light, O wise one. :worship:

We are idiots who don't have a clue about football. All this time I thought our program was being driven into the ground. Thank you so very much, for enlightening us all.

Go piss up a rope!

I am appalled by your condescending attitude.

.678 winning percentage over the past 9 years with 0 SECC and 0 BCS games in not very complex.

We barely scraped by Northern Illinois. If they'd have their quarterback that might have been a loss. We lost to one of the worst Auburn teams I can ever remember and to a UCLA team that lost by 60 the next week. We're barely competitive against the good teams.

I'm more of a DisheartenedOvereater than a GrumpyDrunk. But I suppose that has too many syllables to sing to the meter of Rocky Top.

If we're "grumpy drunks" does that make you a "delusional stoner"?

Last year did turn out to be a good season but we certainly weren't the team grabbing the bull by the horns by any means. In fact, we kind of sloppily stumbled into the championship game in Atlanta. Furthermore, you make the argument that seasons separate each other and you can not compare one with the other, so why do you think you can get away with comparing 08 to 07? Sounds backwards to me.

The "grumpy drunks" are at it again in 08 because Fulmer is at it again in the underachieving department. Our offense is not just poor, but piss poor. The players have no direction or motivation and they lack a central leader figure. The players and coaches are throwing each other under the bus. You can not blame that on the fans. The fans are just questioning and opposing what they are seeing this year because it's very alarming to see a team with an offense that was supposed to be great really turning into an offense that runs so uncoordinated.

I don't know why you mention the recruiting in your post, but it's true, we do have a nation-wide recruiting program that uses a lot of money and is expected to lure great players to the university. It's not the players that we recruit that are the problem, it's what happens once they get here. They all get in trouble or turn into mediocre players. The coaches never develop the players into the all-stars that they should be. Other coaches in the SEC are recruiting mediocre players and building solid teams off of them. It's not about the individuals that we are bringing here through recruiting, it's about what we do with them once they get here. Even the announcers during last night's game mentioned it when they said "The Vols have had just as much talent as the best teams in the nation, but they never make anything out of it." That's really good to be known as the school that lures in top notch talent and does nothing with it.

I'm sure that your tennis stories would be a whole lot cooler if you had won those matches. No one expects us to win every game, but no one wants to lose every game either. And I still don't see the parallel that you are trying to create with your tennis stories. What, are we going to look back on this season years from now and be like "Man do you remember that Bama game in 08 when we lost. What a good game that was."

How do you not see why other fans could be outraged by what Fulmer is doing here? Do you think that you are the sole believer and only person left on Fulmer's side because you are the only right person? The proof is in the pudding here and the fans are not pleased with Fulmer's work. I understand that it takes more than one season to swing in a new change, but Fulmer never swings it passed what we did last year. It's either we have a really bad season, or we make an SEC champ appearance. There's no getting better, we've reached a plateau here where we are dooming ourselves to mediocrity. That's why people are mad.
