Those boys can lay a hit.

When watching the game yesterday, you could always tell when they were laying the hit before you ever saw the number. Berry squares up those shoulders and then just lays them out. He had the one hit across the middle that was uncharacteristic of him (ala Hefney shoulder throw), but immediately wrapped the guy up after laying the shoulder hit.

On special teams, McKenzie absolutely ran through some guys. He explodes through the guy with the ball. Is he getting any reps at LB?

I know everyone is going to freak about this comment, but I don't think Berry is as awesome as everyone goes on about. The hit that you are referring to seemed that Berry thought he could pull a good lick and knock the guy down. He didn't then Berry had to take two more steps and wrap him up. He should have been wrapping him up as he hit him. The hit looked good, but he didn't wrap up.

Berry is becoming notorious for trying to jump for the ball when his man is about 10 foot behind him. He jumps, misses, and the guy scores. This has happened at least twice. I know he's a freshman but after he did it in the Florida game you would think someone would have been stressing for him to cover the man, not trying to jump 15 foot high.

Your first sentence sums up your post...

I wasn't praising Berry for the hit where he threw his shoulder and then wrapped up. I think that was a breakdown for him that the coaches need to point out. He had several other hits where he looked great and made solid tackles.

As for the intercepting vs. knocking down issue...there could be a bit of a problem brewing there. He isn't tall enough to be able to jump up with a lot of receivers and be able to intercept ... the ball is going to be over his jump a lot (as we have seen). If he had focused on knocking the ball out of the endzone on the second georgia touchdown instead of trying to intercept it, he probably could have gotten up high enough to knock it away. I would love to seem him become an interception machine - but he has to learn when to go for the ball and when to knock it away. He is just a freshman, so I hope that the coaches (I know, I know....) can work with him to help him learn when to do which.

TennTradition, you basically said what I was trying to say. Agreed.

I understand what both of you guys are saying and agree...all Im saying is though he hasnt be perfect, I think Berry has done a sufficient job as a true freshman coming in and starting at SS in the SEC

McKenzie would be perfect as a 5th back in a 4-2-5 against spread teams. Better then Karl IMO.

Secondary is improved with Berry, Hefney, Vinson, Johnson, and McKenzie as a 5th DB/LB

I agree. I have been very happy with him. And when he squares up to lay a hit, I'm always loving it.

I saw McKenzie out on more than just Special Teams. I saw 20 in a couple of piles.

Berry is gaining experience. He'll learn how to go after the ball.

In addition to being a stellar athlete, he's a smart kid that learns very, very quickly. In some respects, he'll be able to self coach.

Berry's going to have some growing pains...it is what it is, but when that guy's a junior (barring injury and following a typical progression) he's going to be an AA. He has the ability, he just has to learn to play at this level as opposed to highschool. He could probably jump in front of guys at that level and get the int.

I was more impressed with Bolden. He was all over the place. The tackle on the WR screen was impressive.

I absolutely agree. If he had not pulled over to that side to follow the play, that WR would have likely gotten away for at least a few yards. I was extremely impressed with the hustle and the quality tackle.

I think Bolden ,Mapu and wes Brown finally played like the Def. lineman that we thought they could.
