Greg McElroy viciously calls out Tennessee fans responsible for #EmptyNeyland movement

First off, let me just say, I'm not into the whole 'Empty Neyland' schtick. I live a bit away and catch few games, but I'm not into boycotting.

That being said, I'm sick of hearing about the boys putting on the orange and white, and then the writer proceding to trash the fans. You don't get to trash the fans--sorry, not to be done.

Coaches make 4 mil a year, players get a free education worth tens of thousands, plus extra bennies, plus a shot at much, much more if they can do it.

Joe six pack spends his hard earned money for tickets, gear, and often donations. The fans have a right to expect a certain product for their money.

Sorry, you don't get to put down the fans that make this ongoing multi-million dollar operation what it is, Mr. McElroy. They deserve some consideration, too.

I think he's right.

Through thick and thin, right? Through thick and thin. Yeah, be unhappy if the program's not going in the right direction. But don't walk out on your team. Don't disengage. Don't give up. Through thick and thin.

Glad he called them out.

Sometimes the truth hurts. #EmptyNeyland wasn't a good look for TN fans. We hear all the time how Butch and staff are making us the laughing stock of college football... well when Tn "fans" act more like Commodores than Vols - it's a dissapointing time.

On the flip side, does Joe six pack not understand that he is hurting not only the present Vol product, but hurting future dividends? First, it hurts your chances at luring a prime coach as he sees the ‘dark side’ of the UT fanbase, the underbelly if you will. NO other fanbase (that is also firing their coach) has organized such a thing, only UT. Second thing, recruiting, you are directly affecting a teenagers view of TN and it’s fanbase as they did come to the stadium, and you didn’t. Don’t think this will not be used by EVERY coach to negatively recruit against UT, but you be you and save that $100 while hurting the future.

Football is a business and should be treated as such. I always stay for the games but I understand fan frustration.

If you don't provide a quality product then you will lose support.

AGAIN, I am not defending the 'Empty Neyland' movement, which was pretty much a bust. I'm just sick of defending everybody EXCEPT the fans, who fund this whole freaking circus.

Everybody gets an apologist, except the guy who spends his money on sub-par entertainment, while all the while everybody else has something to gain, including sometimes getting rich.

I'm sure McElroy knows exactly how our fans feel and is well qualified to tell us how we should react.

Yes Sir, top of my class!

Then stick with it!, because you are a Cluster Fork of an NFL QB who makes Colon Crapenick look serviceable!

I met Peyton Manning...You'll never be a Peyton Manning...so stop trying to Quote him Mr. McElroy!

Yeah, be unhappy if the program's not going in the right direction. But don't do anything that might actually get a decision-maker's attention.

fyp.

By the way, I have chosen to make my displeasure with the football team in its current incarnation abundantly clear in a different way -

I haven't been to a tennis match all year.

Something I heard was that people were saying that the tickets were already bought ... that they should give them to people that want to go. I believe there is a major disconnect from fans that are well to do from fans that work paycheck to paycheck. There are some that can afford season passes, but there are some of us that try to save up to go to a game. If someone doesn't want to spend their money on tickets to see a team not producing and stay home and watch on tv ... I have no problem. The movement was out of frustration and is understandable. I for one do not want wish to be ridiculed by people that have money to throw at tickets when my money can go somewhere more productive like bills or food.

Did he include "stupid" in his rant? He should have because unfortunately, we've got an inordinate number of complete mouth breathers in our legion.

Well, since your nasal passages are apparently operational, and since you obviously don't consider yourself one of the legion of the 'stupid', did you bother to click on the link and read his post? If so, why do you need to ask?

Exactly, no other business would put out the product UT has put out over the last decade and then blame the customers for not buying it. I didn't agree with it but I cant blame them

Because I think the whole empty Neyland thing was childish as hell and I didn't feel like wasting my time reading what McElroy had to say about some of the more embarrassing clods in our fan base.

I wonder if ESPN knew if having Greg McElroy weigh in on this would cause a stir...

The whole empty Neyland was a bad look but it was suppose to be a bad look. It's the way for people without a voice to let their voices be heard. There is a lot of people out there who Vols football means more them than almost anything, at the end of the day it probably means too much to them, and they don't have much of a voice.

It's ridiculous the limbo that college football is. It is half ameaturism/ kids in their late teens and early twenties and half million dollar business with multiple coaches being the highest paid facility at their universities.

Imo if people should not be able to expect a winning program and being able to hold a coach accountable then the athletic department should change how they look at football. Stop paying coaches million of dollars, don't put million of dollars into renovations, and charge 10 dollars to go to the game and break even on concessions.

I support Tennessee football and love it, I support the players, I didn't participate in the empty Neyland movement (mostly because i believe CBJ is already a deadman walking), but acting like people are maniacs for wanting to boycott the game is just wrong. Look at what college football is and see it's not ridiculous for people to demand more from their coach.

I'm one of those that lives out of town and to go to a game means hotel, tix, eating out, gas, parking etc, etc, etc..

We have to save in other words.

And as far as making a personal choice... More power to ya.

But the"movement" was dumb and as embarrassing as Greg outlined.

I for one am glad it didn't come to fruition, one because butch is not going to be or coach next year anyway. And two, going to a game with family and friends is part of how many of us became fans as kids to begin with. And why you would want to deprive yourself or your own family/friends from that is beyond me.

It was dumb on many levels.
