McDowell OLB - JRM MLB

I don't think JRM is big enough for the mlb spot. We are going to need him flying around the perimeter vs uf, no one else can do that like JRM. I would rather see McDowell at mlb. It looks like McDowell is a little bigger than JRM.

JRM's "flying around" and just less than mature actions(usually after play) are going to get him in trouble. The "police" in b-ham surely watch replay of games and pass on such things to game refs. who will be watching for him to "fly around".

I am not sure why this is such a crazy concept. Butch and Shoop, if Kirkland is out for more than a week, need to reshuffle our LBs. I'm glad that Jumper works hard and gives his all to the team and is a good story but the Vols simply cannot afford to have him play a lot of snaps at MLB. We have at least two guys (McDowell and Sapp) who are much better than Jumper even though they may not be MLBs regularly. I cannot imagine that Bates or Bituli aren't better options either. UT needs to get its best players on the field and the Vols may need to move players from their more natural positions to accomplish that. It is that simple.

Well stated.

After being so negative last night, I really don't want to keep it up, but if the coaches don't make adjustments and attempt to shuffle the best athletes/LBs up to give us the best chance to win, then it is completely on them... Jumper does well in practice, we all know an have seen that, but when the lights come on, he is lost. Shoop is giving him the benefit of the doubt, but surely after watching last night's game tape, he will see just how big a liability Jumper is and will make the switch... Ohio couldn't come at a better time for us to mix it up and try some new folks in different LB positions

There was talk of Bituli backing up DKjr. Could it be a repeat of last season where Jumper starts until Bituli learns the defense?

See no reason for change like this against Ohio but if DK is out for weeks then maybe.

If it's to be made, don't wait for a vital opponent for it's debut. Got a little leash for growing pains, against Ohio.

Bituli had just been moved to DE.

He, by far, is the most "football smart" player on the roster. Not even close.....

He got tossed in game 1 and was shown hitting guys in the back late which could have easily been flagged. He hasn't really shown much this season

Says who? and why?

Butch...because football? :dunno:

Recent roster move...we had a discussion on here because some wondered about the reason with the DEs already on the roster. With Barnett and possibly Kongbo departing after this year. Will try to remember which thread.

Doesn't make sense to me. So is Blakely working with MLB's? Or is all have Jumper, Bates, and Berry?

Jumper starting for any reason makes me wanna cry and makes opposing offenses pee their pants in joy!

I don't believe Bituli was ever a factor at MLB...projects bigger. He did get a lot of buzz in camp. I think Blakely is still slated to redshirt and be the heir apparent to Kirkland...jmo. Berry and Bates have never worked out for that spot for whatever reason (other than injury).

Berry saw very little reps the Spring of his Freshman year at MLB.

Dillon Bates spent an entire spring at MLB. Couldn't beat out Bynum.

That's correct about Blakely.

Butch and Shoop make this happen. That is a nasty combo. JRM is the leader of defense and can play anywhere. Put him inside and put McDowell in his outside spot.

This will hold it down until Kirkland is back

Agreed. I also think Sapp and Bynum are solid and serviceable. Also Dillon Bates WAKE UP DUDE! GET IN THE GAME!!

JRM is not a MLB. That's not his game. I'd like to see Bynum at MLB against Ohio. Let's hope DKjr. is just out for a week at most.

Our linebackers are almost interchangeable. They have different responsibilities, but their base skill set is almost identical.

DKjr and JRM are both 230 for a reason.
Both excel at being in position and being familiar with play progression.

Bynum is too slow and not very instinctive.

Bynum, and Jumper are drastic drop offs in skills. Neither are ever in good position and that don't make the play when they are.

Sapp and McDowell are much better options . At either position.

I haven't been impressed the last 2 weeks with him. He's a captain and leader of the defense. This type of play is not acceptable imo and he needs to get his head right. jmo

I wish Bates could get it together or get over his injuries. I have a hard time believing Jumper is that much better than Bates. This one is a total head scratcher.

I'm 41 with a bad knee, and I'm not sure if do much worse than jumper. I hope he makes me eat my words though.

It's not a crazy idea. He knows the defense well and has a lot of experience. Plus, he has the instinct to make plays, so he'd be a great fit.
