McCoy was cleared but decided not to play

Players get hurt. You think McCoy wanted to be injured? It was not optimal for his future to have had a long-term injury that kept him off the field.

It's inviting scrutiny by the NFL teams on his health when if he played, there's less reason for them to doubt his health. C'mon.

You're basically saying the relative short money for nothing from UT was worth having to answer questions to a bunch of reporters and NFL teams and likely submit to various tests and scans and possibly lower his draft pick and long term money?

In what universe does that make sense?

I don't blame him (comprehension is not a strong suit of yours) I even alluded as much. My contention is with athletes in general today. We as fans get what we deserve. No knock on McCoy at all. I'm not big on receiving $ for doing nothing. Nothing more. Did the football team give you wedgies as the equipment manager or something?

I guess I could compare him to AJ Brown of titans and eagles. It seems like he was hurt a lot when with the titans I wonder now if McCoy comes in to nfl and signs a huge contract or will coaches hear about him deliberately not playing while well might be a deterrent .

Interesting take. Hopefully he's where he needs to be and makes the transition seemlessly.

He got hurt. At that point we should pull his money?

He got cleared medically but didn't feel able to play. At that point we should pull his money?

At what point do we pull the money in your eyes?

One thing that gets missed is that there’s value to the program just having his name announced as a 1st round pick.

Yes. There are those that are just pissed off, still, that athletes get paid at all, much less sitting, but their value isn't just on the field or court.

I wish McCoy had played for us last year but I'm also very glad when his name is called in the first round they'll inevitably say "from the University of Tennessee" with it. Great boost for the school.

If you are taking $ for whatever the reason you either play and fulfill your obligations or take less money. Way too many people feel athletes are owed something especially after they have been cleared by a doctor " but not his medical staff (attorneys) and yes there should be an agreement that you play for this if healthy and something else if you aren't healthy.

That's how athletes are always treated because they actually are often physically far more stressed than a normal job.

Few people in the world can do what McCoy can do at the level he does it with his body and it places huge pressures on his body to do it. UT invests heavily in facilities and trainers to maintain these athletes in top condition and if the athlete isn't ready to go or UT treats injuries lightly, it reflects on us as a program.

McCoy felt he wasn't ready. I'm sure there were discussions with staff about his condition and his feelings.

UT accepted his decision and that's the end of that for me, despite the fact that the team would've been stronger with him out there. It's not lost money but it's not optimized money either, I will grant that.

Why should it trouble anybody what two intelligent parties agree to as far as compensation?

Because when I am passed on as part of that compensation have an issue with something for nothing. I 100% get your take and don't mean to insuate anything derogatory towards Jirmod. In a nutshell I think sports in general would be more entertaining if there was something in the agreements that encountered athletes to play. I'm not interested in paying for something 6 months ahead of time only to now be keenly aware of the term "work load management" and again this is no reflection for what I think about Jirmod. He didn't invent the current get paid for the entire season but not play the entire season.

If we had been in the mix for a playoff spot, I think he would have played a few games.

I don't really blame him, the season was trashed by the time he was ready.

Like many I was roasted for stating the opinion McCoy was cleared to play @ some point last season, but he decided not to play. I don’t blame him but would’ve loved to seen him return.

- Jermod McCoy told reporters in Indianapolis on Thursday that he was cleared to return to with Tennessee

football last season, but opted not to because he "didn't feel ready."

McCoy didn't play for the Vols last season, but did return to practice while coming back from a torn ACL suffered in January 2025.

Go Vols!
That is called wisdom. It would be foolish to return if you do not feel ready. 1 year college eligibility vs. a career in the pros... easy math.

When I was injured, and it was not on the job, I continued to get paid until I returned to work.
