Maybe my negativism kicking in but this was my first thought as well. My brother-in-law was an heir apparent to his father (who was a professional athlete and well respected coach who died young) ...only problem...he didn't possess his father's level of football skills (did get some good baseball genes). Always felt sorry for him, knowing he felt the pressure....I tried to encourage him along the way. He did ok though.... he's now a seasoned Dr and author who owns a large clinic employing lots of folks. His dad would be so proud of him....No pressure, kid...
I believe Cutcliffe is an analyst for Texas.Y'all need to remember that every Manning has made their own choice in where they went to school. It typically comes down to which coach they have the best relationship with. With Peyton and Eli is was Coach Cutcliffe. With Arch it's Sarkisian.
So if Marshall doesn't come here it won't be on Peyton. Don't be like Ole Miss fans and how they turned on Archie after Peyton decided to come to Tennessee.
He is Peyton Manning’s son. No matter where he goes, that’s going to be the expectation.Zero chance he ends up here. Would you want to go to a school where you will be expected to be Peyton 2.0?
I think expectations will be high anywhere he goes but with our fan base, they will be off the charts if he comes here.
He needs to follow his own path. I would welcome him with open arms, but Peyton is the last Manning whose footsteps I would want to follow in. Archie would be difficult. Eli was a great college QB and NFL HOFer in his own right, but Peyton's shadow is so big when it comes to the Vols. It got downright creepy at times. Peyton deserves a statue and pedestal, no doubt, but his success here put expectations on every single pocket passing QB that followed. Whether it was Clausen, Ainge, or whatever, every nice completion was compared to Peyton by some announcer or fans (or Coach Fulmer saying every young QB reminded him of Peyton). It was over the top hero worship in some cases. Don't get me wrong, I love Peyton and am so grateful that he is a VFL, but he was a once in a lifetime player here, and the game has changed so much at this level.Plenty follow in Dad's footsteps.
Very well stated. He needs to follow his own path. I would welcome him with open arms, but Peyton is the last Manning whose footsteps I would want to follow in. Archie would be difficult. If I were in that position, I would just let my kid go where he is most comfortable and be happy if he chose Tennessee, but aware that it might not be the best place for him to grow as a person and football player.
