Marques Johnson, a 6-foot-5 freshman guard, has decided to leave the University of Tennessee basketball program and transfer to another school, head coach Bruce Pearl announced today.

Not a big surprise. It was clear he wasn't getting it done and was getting zero playing time.

Not surprised, but 2 questions. Where did the info come from because I can't find it? Does that leave the team with an extra scholarship for a spring signing? There are still some quality players in the prep ranks to look at bringing to the squad.

Trust me. Expect articles at all the regular places soon.

Pearl has even already commented on it as well.

It does open up another scholly.

Gotta link on this yet?

Bummer, I thought he looked pretty good in his limited action.

Possibly yet another reason I'm not a basketball coach.

Doubters!

LOL

Just kidding. Glad someone found the link. I just post what I hear when it comes from the right people. I'm not gonna look for the press to catch up too. :p

i'm just going by the columns written in the tennessean about him. they said he didnt give nearly as much effort as the other freshmen and often complained. guys like ramar smith are in there for an extra hour after practice shooting and this guy is whining.

Early on in the exhibition games I thought he might be a great addition especially with his size for the point guard spot. He played well early and seemed to fall behind later on. Kinda looked like he couldn't catch up with the speed of the game from H.S. to college.

Guys like this that piss about playing time need to be gone. If he was good enough to get playing time, he certainly would have gotten it. I say good riddance.

Sad comment!

yes, it is sad comment because it is true. Johnson played high school 20 minutes from my high school. When he committed to UT alot of people scratched their head. His defense is very lacking and was not a very hard working player in practice. He was at a public school that has a coach that does not push his players very hard and he could get away with it, but at this level, you can't. He was a complainer and he has "those parents." The type of parents that a coach does not like because they do nothing but complain. The kid could play 31 of 32 minutes of a game and they would whine and complain, if the other good player on the team got more shots or scored more points they complained..he was the 2nd best player on the team by far.

I remember people telling me that when he committed to UT that nobody said he would last. He is good enough to play at a very very small D1, D2 or even at a good NAIA team. He definately is not a major D1 player.

I had hoped that he would be able to make it at UT, unfortunately he could not make the transition from high school to college.

He was not a hard worker in high school, so I can see where that could have been carried over in college.

sounds like he'd fit right in with a team coached by Jerry Greene or Buzz Peterson.

i would take a hard worker like bradshaw over a complainer like marques anyday. regardless of how talented they are.

Wasn't he the first signee out of this recruiting class? I hate it for the kid that it isn't going to work out, but if Pearl doesn't feel like he has caught on to the system, then it is probably best that Marques and the team go their seperate ways.

We were starting Howell and not playing Johnson. Now, we have an 8-man rotation plus Passley, and we're still not playing Johnson, so it's pretty obvious that he wasn't cutting it.
