Mark Schlabach of ESPN has Tennessee ranked #25 in his 2020 Preseason Top 25 :cool: Strangely he says C Brandon Kennedy is leaving:rolleyes:

Mostly a reasonable write-up except for this part:

UT's biggest deficiency is still in the trenches, but the return of guard Trey Smith and addition of former UGA offensive tackle Cade Mays will help.

Can't agree with this at all. In 2017 and '18, that was our biggest deficiency. At this point, we're returning virtually everyone from a good O-line that could become great in 2020 (particularly if Cade Mays is declared eligible). Meanwhile, our D-line saw major improvements in 2019 and we lose virtually no one from it. Indeed, we'll add a lot of depth to the DL this season (and we get Gooden back).

Biggest question marks in 2020 will be QB and the passing game. JG has been frustratingly inconsistent. And it's yet to be seen if Maurer, Bailey, or Shrout can overtake him. Meanwhile, we lose our 2 biggest playmakers in Jennings and Callaway.

Tennessee will have a great offensive line in 2020 and i can't wait to see them pave the road:cool:

I think that's a pretty fair assessment. We should be somewhat better unless we can't find a quarterback. Don't think JG will be the guy next year. I think he will be a pretty reliable back up as he was this year.

Still getting bumped because of recruiting and the Jimbo effect.

I'm sure there's some grumbling in and around College Station, but on a national level his underwhelming-ness hasn't really been covered. This year, they had perhaps the most impressive set of losses imaginable (at Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, at Georgia, at LSU) but they aren't paying him $75m guaranteed to win all of his games except the ones against really good teams. He needs to start winning some of those.

Oh well. These things are totally ridiculous. Recruiting class of 2020 hasn't been completed yet, the transfer portal still has a gob of folks in it, and most importantly we haven't even had spring OR fall camp yet. Injuries, transfers, academic causalities, etc etc. Not sure how a reasonably competent sports writer could even begin to "rank" teams for 2020 when so much information is yet to be determined (unless of course he was made to so as to earn his salary). No secret I am NOT a fan of these "way to early pre-season polls". I know they are just for the fans to spit and spew over but it's...well...silly.

this. if we have good qb play, we'll be capable of finishing as a top 20 (or higher) team. if not...we don't.

huge off season for the QB's and WR's coming up.

on defense, if we settle in at LB, the defense could take a major step....

Just win football games and the rankings or lack therof will follow. Pre season polls are basically worthless anyway.

Haven’t been ranked in a long long time now l’ll take whatever preseason hype we can get. 6 straight wins rolling into the offseason will most certainly be 7 headed to Norman if we can pull that upset off top 15 here we come

With the pieces coming back, it seems to me that it will depend on quarterback play. If we get above average play, we will be better than that. If we get average play, that's about where our ceiling would be and below average could be a 6 or 7 win season and out of the top 25. I think quarterback play will be better either from the benefit of a second year in Chaney's offense or better recruits. Either way is fine as long as there is improvement.
