Peyton Manning still conflicted by coaching changes at Tennessee | thenewsstar.com | The News Star

Peyton Manning still conflicted by coaching changes at Tennessee
By Bob Heist • Louisiana Gannett news • May 26, 2009

He’s a Louisiana native, but bleeds orange.

He’s celebrated in this state, but a god in Tennessee.

Think Peyton Manning was caught off guard after Phillip Fulmer was forced out on Rocky Top, John Chavis landed in the bayou and Lane Kiffin’s first few months as head coach have made the Vols a bit of a laughingstock in Southeastern Conference football circles?

“I’ve been getting to know Lane these past few months,” Manning said afterdelivering the keynote speech during Acadian Ambulance Service’s annual Paramedic Luncheon in the Lafayette Convention Center.

“It’s been a difficult transition for me, like a lot of Tennessee folks. I’m a Phillip Fulmer guy, he recruited me and coached me.”

The star of the day at a fete that drew 1,500 to celebrate LaPlace employee Chuck Benedict as Paramedic of the Year, Manning — a three-time NFL MVP selection with the Indianapolis Colts — was not at a loss for words on what happened at the University of Tennessee last year.

Fulmer, who recruited Manning out of Newman High School in New Orleans, went 152-52 in 17 seasons with UT. But in the middle of a 5-7 season in 2008, he was informed his tenure would not continue. New coach Lane Kiffin, fired in the middle of the NFL season by the Oakland Raiders, was hired.

Chavis and the rest of Fulmer’s key assistants weren’t retained and the noted defensive coordinator was hired by Les Miles at LSU.

It’s been a whirlwind circus that’s seemed to work in LSU’s favor. Spring drills ended with the Tigers looking like one of the country’s top defensive units again under Chavis’ new scheme. Kiffin has broken several minor NCAA recruiting violations since his arrival and made numerous wild statements about other SEC programs — including Florida’s national championship coach Urban Meyer.

“Obviously, the nice thing up until this past year, every time I went back to Knoxville, really the entire coaching staff that coached me was still there,” Manning said. “Coach Chavis — Chief was what we called him — I was not surprised to see Coach Chavis rebound and get a great job. LSU is lucky to have him as their defensive coordinator.

“But like I said, I’m a Phillip Fulmer guy. There’s something about a player and their college head coach that’s a special bond. My Dad (Archie Manning) and Johnny Vaught at Ole Miss were super close, and I’ll always be that way with Coach Fulmer.”

I am not sure where you are getting that he isn't on board with Kiffin yet.

This was a speech made in Louisiana and he seems like he was talking more about his connection at UT and that is obviously with Fulmer, and I am sure it is weird for him to go back to his school and his coach isn't there anymore. But coaching changes happen all over and most ex-players buy in.

But once again no where in that article does he say anything negative about kiffin...its just an LSU guy making it appear that way.

Read between the lines.

LSU must have only played first and second down in spring drills.

Wow. A guy that got recruited and played for a coach is sad to see him leave. Imagine that.

I didn't say he's not on board, just wondering if he is conflicted since that is the way the article is written. Peyton is one of the program's best assets and the new coaching staff needs his support. I hope he doesn't think that supporting Kiffin is some how not supporting Fulmer. Fulmer is gone. Its' just troubling that he keeps mentioning Fulmer when asked about Kiffin.

I hope he comes around. Lets hope he makes it to a few games this year. Go Vols.

Yet another member of the "Keep Buzz Peterson" Choir is heard from. Manning needs to stick to making bad TV commercials and bitching about the Colts not consulting him on every move they make.

I'm sure the quotes were taken after question about Fulmer, its just wrote with an anti Kiffin spin...the way most other SEC articles will be written this offseason.

and you titled your email earlier- Kiffin still not on board?:p

Peyton is well documented as having spent time with Lane earlier this year. Sure it's different, but don't look for Peyton to back away from Knoxville and UT football.

While I don't think Peyton is anti Kiffin in anyway, or that our program would be severly hurt going forward if Peyton played a smaller role, I do think his support only helps.

Like they shouldn't? Just about every franchise player is consulted with personnel moves etc.

Who is more important to UT, hat or Peyton Manning?

i think the OP is only emplying that Peyton is TN football in most peoples eyes and if he were to publicly critize Kiffin it would only throw more fuel to the fire. Now will that actually effect the results for the new staff? Not in the least, but that was what he was getting at.

And like someone stated, Peyton is on board with Kiffin anyway so this really is a moot point.:eek:k:

cmooooonnnnnn. That was a fairly transparent exercise in yellow journalism. You could feel the quotes squirming about as they were rudely taken out of their comfortable and proper context. It didnt even tell us which words exactly peyton was not at a loss for about last season. 3 time MVP?? is that right?? jeez. Anywho slanted like a forward slash and pretty plain to see.

Taking my position on the issues: Buzz Peterson and Phillip Fulmer are rightfully fired.
Taking the side of Captain Stats: Buzzball and "Working Like Heck" are still the order of the day.

You suck... I'd obviously be on your side.

I've never understood your hate for Peyton.

So you really think the Colts should make decisions about the direction of the offense without talking to Manning?

If you have disdain for Peyton you can't possibly like Favre either.

PM won a Super Bowl, what's the problem?
