Make or break year for Butch?

WATCH THE FILM!!!!!!! You have guys like Sutton, Dobbs, Hurd, Kamara, Kirkland, JRM, Foreman, Martin, Lewis, as experienced players missing some major opportunities to make big plays while also making some bush-league mistakes that they don't normally make....

Is that coaching??? NO--that's all on the players....

Sutton did come back and play a pretty good game...Abernathy looked great....and Hurd is a beast as usual....but Hurd missed at least 3 opportunities for huge runs...

and it IS KNEE-JERK after 1 game vs. Appy State...not to mention the first game....

At the end of the day when the players perform well the coach gets credit for developing, planning, and adjustments. When they play poorly he gets questioned for the same. He's the CEO, Im cool with him getting his praise when his team performs and questioned when they don't.

This says it all....You don't want to listen to anything but your own opinions--and to those who give blanket affirmations to them....and I don't care who agrees with you....

Do you even know how to watch film?
Have you ever played a down of FB in your life?
Have you ever stood on the sideline and listened as the HC and the play-caller interacted during a game??

Let me end it with this....because I'm done wasting my time on folks who can't or won't read.....

please come back on here and call me out for my foolishness AFTER WE BEAT VT AND FLORIDA....

GO VOLS!

We should beat both so that's not really a feather in the cap, other than finally doing it in regards to UF.

That's very true.....and I agree.....

But just watch the film of the game and see how many mistakes the players made that have nothing to do with coaching.....

It's like unforced errors in tennis.....no one to blame but yourself.....even though you've been coached up about how to play and what to do...

There seem to be several issues being bandied about here. This not being a make or break year for CBJ doesn't mean that he is, or will be, an elite coach. The coaching and personnel can be improved, though, and I believe the opportunity for improvement will be provided.

You are a pretty intelligent guy....we don't always agree...but usually you have pretty decent insight...
:hi: Same to you.

But-

1. Did you watch the film of the game? Did you actually watch the VERY PATHETIC play of our OL? How in the world can you call them very talented and experienced when Appy State made 5 OL look worse than a High School OL? And Dobbs almost never had time to set up and throw the ball down the field because 51 was in his face after throwing Thomas #55 down at the LOS?
Actually.... I did force myself to suffer through watching it again just to watch the OL and DL.

The DL wasn't nearly as bad as I thought after some early game problems.

The OL as a group played poorly. Coleman and the two OG's played awful. The question mark guys at OT.... didn't play great but played better.

Then Dobbs for his part made things worse. For an example, check the play at around the 8 minute mark of the 4th qtr. ASU dropped 8 guys into coverage and the OL held the pocket. Dobbs inexplicably broke the pocket giving their D an opportunity to make a play.

For the most part, the pass pro wasn't that bad. Dobbs throwing it.... was that bad. Even that long ball wasn't a great pass. If thrown on time and with proper leading, Malone catches it in stride.

The biggest problem I saw with the OL is that pretty much none of them consistently holds a block through the play. Several runs were shortened because they released their blocks while Hurd was trying to fight through the clutter.

2. Just watch our DEPTH on D fold under pressure on that last drive of Appy State's in regulation....

Mistakes everywhere....even when Shoop dials up some great play calls. We even have an all out blitz called with our Nickel and Safety blitzing and one of them stops like he's been shot (#13)? and #8 Martin looked lost as a goose on that same play--not knowing his assignment and what area he had to cover?

Honestly....would really like to hear your comments about those things...:hi:
I honestly don't have that many issues with the D. IIRC, ASU returned 9 or so starters on O. UT held them to their 2nd lowest total O since becoming FBS and their 3rd lowest yds per play.

They run a "trick" offense unlike anything UT will see again this year.

And let's be honest, that prayer that Lamb had answered on that swing pass is wet and smells like the floor under a urinal. That play accounted for 33 of the 77 yards on that drive.

Plus, I'm willing to give them more of a pass with a new DC in the first game. They likely had some communication issues that will be smoothed out, JRM was a loss, and all of them seemed to play better as the game went on.

The end result is all that is relevant to me and thats what the HFC and his staff are in charge of. Whether the coach makes a poor call in a game or player drops a punt that results in a turnover, doesn't matter.
Does the coach get players good enough to win with and can he get as much or more out of them than his competition.

I don't have a problem with anything you said here...and agree...Vereen had that throwback covered...but didn't make the play....

I was wanting your comments on App. State's last drive...

In my opinion....they didn't do anything that special...but our D played VERY VERY POORLY when the game was on the line.....

#4 Lewis to start...20 looked lost...

We have to have Vereen on the field when the game is on the line! I don't understand why he wasn't out there and #4 Lewis was....

13 Foreman just STOPPED on a blitz that should've resulted in a sack or an INT....the back took 22 and left 13 wide open and free to get to the QB...but he stopped..

#8 Martin would've had a pick 6 if he would've known his assignment and gotten back into his zone on that play...only 2 receivers in the pattern...Shoop made a great call, and the PLAYERS just blew it....

Even #9 Barnett broke down on that reverse....those are simply mistakes in HIGH SCHOOL fundamentals...

Sutton made 3 great plays on that drive...

All of those mistakes in FUNDAMENTALS screams to me that the guys just were not ready to play...and that they were cocky and way too overconfident...

comments???

I can look at it again but by that point in my first re-watch I was focused more on the OL.

But generally speaking, I can forgive stuff like this that can be cleaned up. A good bit is communication. Some is also leadership. JRM is a key guy in on field communication. While you can tell a back up that he's the man when this or that happens.... it really doesn't work until he's experienced it for himself.

We probably should give Satterfield a little credit there too. He made some good calls and caught UT out of position.

If you are putting this into the perspective of the whole game.... ASU's last drive never should have mattered. UT should have hung about 50 on them.

I have come to realize that some of you really want to see Tennessee fail. It has nothing to do with who the coach is, who is playing - you just want to see Tennessee fail. You like turmoil. You like controversy.

Constructive criticism is one thing - constant degrading is bullying.

just curious which ones are the ones that fit your silly view of people wanting the team to fail?, the ones who love mediocrity or the ones with high expectations?

I sure in the hell don't love mediocrity and feels like CBJ is learning on the job to coach big time football...

LWS do you think Butch realizes that his ridiculous playing it safe to save Dobbs legs nearly lost us the game on Thursday, while other teams were putting it all out there in their season openers? Or is he too stubborn to admit it? Also why on Gods green earth would he want to redshirt Jack Jones? I have supported Butch but sometimes his decisions are just beyond explaining. Thanks for your insight.

I don't think not using Dobbs in run game was an issue as far as almost losing the game. It was the OL mostly plus just a lack of intensity and effort as a team. Had we played the same game plan but with more intensity and effort, we beat Appy 49-13. JMO

On Jack, he has wanted to redshirt. Last year and he is more than open to this year. Play and injuries might scrap that but hasn't yet. He needs a year in weight room to get bigger and stronger.

If we look like the same team this weekend against VT, we may lose. App State is good, but we have pulled in enough 4 and 5 star players to at least look like we belong on the same field (especially in the trenches) with a G5 team. If we look the same all season long, we very well may lose to VT, UF, UGA, A&M, Bama, and who knows who else.

I am withholding judgement until after this weekend. Last weekend is the most unprepared I have ever seen a Jones coached UT team look. If it is an anomaly, it will be forgotten soon.

All we can really hope at this point is we overlooked App State SEVERELY and were lucky enough to win a game we probably shouldn't have.

All that being said, if we don't show improvement this year again, I will not call for firing Jones yet, but I will no longer have faith that he can coach this team past 8 or 9 regular season wins.

He can perhaps renew a lot of confidence, in this scenario, with a new OC and allowing them to run their system.
