I want all of you who want a coaching change to make a list as complete as possible of all of the coaches that would satisfy you as a long term replacement for Dooley. Don't put who you think we'll end up with, just who you would be satisfied with the hiring of. These can be people who are employed with someone in the NCAA or NFL or someone unemployed. Just make a list of who would make you happy. Or more importantly, whose hiring would NOT tick you off?

Interested to hear the responses.

I'll start:

The Highly Unlikely:
1. Jon Gruden
2. Nick Saban
3. Bill Cowher
4. Pete Carroll
5. Chip Kelly
6. Urban Meyer
7. Charlie Strong
8. Jack Del Rio
9. Dan Mullen
10. Jimbo Fisher

The More Likely:
1. Tommy Tuberville
2. Gus Malzahn
3. Brian Kelly
4. Rich Rodriguez
5. David Cutcliffe

I'm sure if I thought more, I could come up with a little better list, but none of those names would tick me off. All of those guys have something they could bring to UT.

Who WOULD tick me off:
1. Bobby Petrino
2. Kirby Smart

Hmm, coaches I would hire over Dooley. How many coaches are in Div 1 football?

Seriously, I bet I could look at a list of coaches and pick out 40 in lesss than 2 minutes I would take right now.

I would take either Petrino or Smart over Dooley and not think about it twice. Petrino would win right away and Smart would boost recruiting. All a sudden those guys who Smart had headed to Bama to be 5th or 6th on the depth chart takes a hard look at Tennessee and playing early. JMO

I will take any of the first eight you have listed. Those are trophy coaches!

Of those eight, Charlie is the one who we are most likely to attract.

I would be happy with Charlie.

Of the second group, no to Tommy. No to Gus. No to David. I would certainly take Brian Kelly. Doubt that he is leaving the golden dome anytime soon for Tennessee. Rich...mixed feelings.

I will also say no to Kirby and Bobby

Realistic only...

1. Gary Patterson (TCU)
2. Charlie Strong (Louisville)
3. Butch Jones (Cincinatti)
4. Kyle Whittingham (Utah)
5. Mike Riley (Oregon St)
6. Matt Campbell (Toledo)

I would LOVE Charlie Strong, but Louisville sounds like they are very committed to him. They said they are committed to making him the highest paid coach in the biz if they have to. I think they're bluffing. But I don't see him as the type who would leave just because he still values his word, and wants to see the rebuilding through.

I don't see why Tommy would be such a bad hire, he's done a good job every where he's been. He may be more closer to the Phil Fulmer end of the spectrum though, but he's still winning games. Gus won't leave Arky St. Not yet anyways. Cutcliffe won't happen here, but I wouldn't be ticked at his hire. Rich Rod would be a big gamble, but he would at least be exciting.

Let me add one to my list:

Dana Holgerson

I would agree with Gary Patterson, absolutely. I don't know why I forgot him and Chris Petersen. Not so much on the others.

Why would you not want Strong? The guy has been tremendous everywhere he's been! He's a hot young up and comer and would be the type of long-termer we need.

I was really high on Holgerson like a month ago but it seems like his stock has dropped drastically. Regardless, I'd still be happy with the hire if he brought along a good DC.

Sorry. If you would have scrolled up, you would have seen where Strong was on my list, and I said I would LOVE to hire him. I just didn't mention him because I already had.

If we couldn't get a HUGE name, he's my #1 pick.

Jokes aside, I might as well go ahead and make my list. This is who I would want, not who I think we have a shot with.

Gary Patterson
David Shaw
Al Golden
Jon Gruden
Bill Cowher
Mike Riley
Mike Nolan
Jay Gruden
Lovie Smith

Rumors from alot of places say Patterson is looking around. He would be 1 of my 1st calls and a great option. I don't think Strong is worth 4+ million. Riley won't leave OrSt as he is an alum and doing well. Whittingham has fallen off a little, but still would be worth a look. I like Jones alot. I am not sure he could recruit well enough here, but he is a good coach and does a hell of a job of coaching up lesser talent. I don't know much about Campbell. Looks like he as always coached at smaller schools. 8-1 so far this year looks good. Cinci is the toughest team they played it looks like. 25-20 to Buffalo?? Not sure.

he's 52. I would hardly call that young. But I wouldn't be opposed to his hiring.

CRAP! :eek:hmy:

OK I admit it, I didn't know he was THAT old! He looked very young to me when he was the DC at Florida.

Still, by coaching standards 52 is not all that old really.

Would be happy with:
1. Chris Petersen
2. Gary Patterson

Would not be happy with:
1. David Cutcliffe
2. Tommy Tuberville
3. Bobby Petrino
4. Any total unknowns or anyone with a losing record

Might be happy with (i.e. they could be good, but since I can't interview them, it's Hart's responsibility to make sure they are a good fit before hiring them):
1. Charlie Strong
2. Dan Mullen
3. Sonny Dykes
4. Butch Jones
5. Mark Hudspeth
6. Gus Malzahn
7. Willy Taggart
8. Dave Doeren
9. Eric Mangini
10. Josh McDaniels

I like a lot of these names but most seem to be a lot of small-name guys. We really need a big hire. Can't afford to hire someone from a small D1 program regardless of how they may look right now.

While I would love a slam dunk hire as much as the next person, I think a young proven winner from a smaller school is maybe our best bet to energize the program and get us back to winning quickly. My fear is we get someone simply because they have a recognizable name and give them a big contract when their best days coaching may well be behind them. I think that's a real danger with someone like a Tuberville (and maybe even a Petrino).
