Majors or Fulmer?

Which coach, Majors or Fulmer, has left the program in better shape for his successor? To get the program nationally competitive again, who was left with the easier job? Fulmer after Majors, or our new coach after Fulmer?

Not really a fair comparison. And we won't know until the next years and we see how Fulmer's recruits respond to another coach.

I really think that each situation is about equal. What they both come down to is that each coach was left with talent but neither one knew how to handle what they left behind.

Irregardless of what happens in the future, which coach has left the program in better shape. I am not talking about what a new coach does in the future.

You can't say until we see how the program and players perform in the next years.

From a financial and national standing point, it's no debate that Fulmer has left the program in better shape.

We won't know how good this talent can be until we see them perform, and fulmer's players run their course.

I think he meant (I could be wrong) that you can dress a turd up but it's still a turd. If the current players stink then it will be evident regardless of who the coach is. If not, that will be obvious too.

BTW Crompton will always suck as an SEC QB.

But we don't know if it is bad coaching or just lack of talent. We don't know if they are as bad talentwise as they have been on the field or if it's that they are not coaching them up to their ability.

Fulmer left two of his worst recruiting classes and probably no coaches for his successor. Johnny Majors wins this one.

At this point, that's true, but the situation is so completely different that it's not really accurate.

Fulmer was basically promoted from within when he took the job with Majors, and had a group that had won for him that season (and lost for Majors). Fulmer's coaches were Major's coaches. Fulmer's replacement will come in from the outside (unless hell freezes over), and it is likely the new coach may not want to retain fulmer's assistants, with a couple of possible exceptions.

I definitely think Fulmer has left a program on the decline big time. I think Majors had a solid, although not great, program when Fulmer took over.

I guess Majors last team had more talent. As others have pointed out though, the SEC is much, much tougher now than it ever was then.

Some of the Majors teams like the 1989 edition were absolutely loaded. I don't know how you couldn't win a championship with those players.

As far as accomplishments on the field and off - Fulmer is head and shoulders above anything Majors did here.

You also have to consider the recruiting at that time. Tennessee was a much easier sell as far as the SEC is concerned.

All in all it's tough to compare the two for a number of reasons.
