I know all about the 1985 season. Kelly Ziegler was one of my highschool football coaches.
You're missing what I'm saying.
He said Johnny Majors' coached teams at UT got respect.
He said that CPF coached teams did not get respect, pointing out that the 98 team was an underdog to an FSU team that handled a Florida team that UT squeaked by.
I asked him why, if JM coached teams got so much respect, were they underdogs to Miami.
I know why. It's because Miami was a much better team on paper and ranked higher.
In 98, one could make the argument that FSU was better on paper.
I got ya. Thanks for the clarification. I think when you exceed expectations there is more room for respect like in 85. Many of Majors teams were not heavy favorites to win except for 90. 89 was even a total surprise team winning at UCLA the way that they did and running all over Auburn.
In 98, Tennessee had won those close games but a pass interfence on 4th down with under a minute against syracuse. A missed field goal by UF in OT, and the fumble by arkansas, and Weinke not playing in the Fiesta bowl. Perhaps those "gifts" or "fortunate events" gave the perception we were lucky as opposed to winning by a larger margin. However, lots of teams have won with a little help. It does not take away from championship in my opinion. It makes it that much more memorable. Just ask a mets fan in 86.
The fact i get comments here in north carolina that if Weinke were not hurt, FSU would have won that game. That tells me that the national championship team was not as well respected as the other BCS champions from some. However, i respected any UT team that has fielded a SEC champion or National champion.
