Johnny Majors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
What has become of the UT football I grew up following, it's a shame (and a sham).

hmmm Funny that article doesnt mention the 3-0 start Fulmer had us at when JM returned from his surgery, only to lose 3 of the next 5. It also didnt mention that JM led us to two embarassing losses (Arkansas and So. Car and his usual loss to bama) to upstart SEC teams (thier first season in the league).

Neither loss being near as embarassing as losing to Vanderbilt and going 5-6.

Hmmmm WHo was the last coach to lose to VANDY before Fulmer??? WHat was the guys name???

ANd yes, you tell me that 2 upstart SEC teams, in their first year in the SEC, beating what was a 3-0 team isn't embarassing???

Not as embarassing as losing to Peabody and finishing with a losing record. Also, the Vanderbilt team Majors lost to in '82 went to a bowl. Which bowl did the '05 Commodores participate in?

I don't remember people being upset when Majors was fired. Most people thought he was too conservative, and wanted someone to come in and open up the offense.

Erie how the past is repeating itself. People won't be upset when Fulmer steps down at the end of this season either. No matter what happens, before the bowl game (or at the end of the regular season if we don't go) Fulmer will announce his retirement.

Some interesting stats from the Chattanooga Times Free Press today
Since leading Tennessee to the 1998 national championship, Fulmer is 71-32 -- a .689 winning percentage -- and the Vols have zero SEC titles.

From 1985 through 1992, Majors' last eight seasons, the Vols were 69-24-5 -- a .704 winning percentage -- and won three SEC titles.

Im not in anyway criticizing what Majors did at UT. But in 92, it was time for a change.

Winning % didn't mean much when JM was losing every year to bama.

It would be interesting to see how Major's salary compared to his peers in his last several years as coach. Safe to say his compensation wasn't in the top 10% of Division I coaches for nearly a decade like Fulmer.

Not arguing it wasn't time for change in 1992, wondering why there isn't complete agreement now.

I think a lot of it had to do with the 3-0 start (wins over UGA and UF). People started talking about the first ever Championship game and the VOLS being in it.

Its whole different picture when you open the season getting your butts kicked in 2 of the first 3 games.

Social learning.

Major's firing came when I was young so I'm not all to familliar. From what I've heard Majors pissed a lot of people off and didn't care whereas Fulmer likes to appease.

Please correct me if I'm wrong elder wiser ones.
