I don't know how many would feel the same as I would, but for me... that would be the end of my lifetime's love relationship with college football.
Lemme ask: would you vote to have your church advertise products on its sign out front, on its steeple, and on the pews inside... if it would lead to your church becoming the largest church in your town/city?
No. But why?
The comparison is not between college football and worshipping God [insert sermon here] but that both institutions are repositories of values, and ideally, values shared by a community that subscribes to them and supports them. If your church has a building and property, then it takes on the burden of many business aspects, which necessarily compromise its core mission. Land may be purchased, but just to provide parking one day a week. A pastor may be hired for his dynamic personality and professionalism, rather than his ability to feed and provide care for the flock. It's easy for business acumen to lead to loss of mission.
Over the next few years, which corporate entities will be the gold mine of jersey patch endorsements? Does Tennessee have a natural relationship with anyone in Silicon Valley or Wall Street that would allow us to "compete" on a nationwide scale? What corporations do Tennesseans believe in enough to endorse with what they wear?
I can foresee a time when the Tennessee Vols become--not the competitor, but--the field of competition between Weigels and WaWa in the SEC. And if so, a time when the market value of pre-patch jerseys goes through the roof!
