I don't know much about Lovie Smith, and I am not a huge christian. But look at this video of him of him, he seems well spoken and I think he would be a great recruiter, and probably a decent coach for college. Saban sucked in the NFL as well..

If he really wanted to be Christlike then he would resign from the Bears. It's pretty plain to see that he's stealing their money.

That comment had me crying....lmao!!!

Edit: i agree L. Smith is a class act all the way. Don't think he would be a good fit for us though.
Great man though.

A few might try to nitpick and disagree that Lovie Smith isn't a good HC. No one can disagree that Lovie Smith isn't a good person.

That said, St. Smith won't be coming to Knoxville.

How is it nitpicking? Look at his record. Outside of one or two years, it's not good. Why in the world do you think the Bears are probably wanting him gone?

He's 52-44 in the most competitive league on the planet. At least schematically, a .500 NFL coach is light-years ahead of most college coaches.

it would get us out of having to "steal" a coach from another school... not that we'll take a major PR hit anyway, but it's another plus to hiring him...

If you take out his one "great" year and the year before that, he's 28-36. That's not impressive to me. And, I disagree on the light-years comment. Some are. Some aren't.

If you take away our last two NCs, we haven't won one in nearly 60 years. Reality doesn't work that way.

Actually, reality works perfectly that way. I'm talking about wins/losses, and you're talking about championships. Apples and oranges bud. He's been very mediocre and below outside of those 2 years.

I'm tired of arguing this. Those 2 years actually did happen. I don't see why you refuse to give him credit for them.

He is my pick. Christianity and morals are something this program has been lacking, and not only is it an amazing attribute that has an effect on the entire team, but it's a image and something that I want projected with our University. I know we want wins, and I do too. But if wins have to come at the price of making our school look bad and recruiting thugs and breaking the rules, then I think we've lost more than we will ever win, haven't we?

I want to be a program that is known for winning, but wins because they work hard, follow the rules, and are respectable men on and off the field. I want people to look at UT and honestly have nothing to say. I don't want to hear "Yeah, but they had three arrested last week," or "they don't even graduate half of their players."

Plus, it's great for recruiting. Parents who are believers are worried that their kids will lose their faith when they go to college, and Lovie could help to be a Christian role model to these kids. Parents would love that.

Maybe his record doesn't speak volumes, but I do think that playing with passion and heart would be instilled in these kids, and I see them playing hard for him.

I would be 1000% behind this guy if they hired him.

The apples are that Lovie has been handcuffed by a family-owned/run team that likes to have a lot of say and a GM in Jerry Angelo who gets way too much credit and not nearly enough blame IMO. The oranges are he's had complete crap for QBs (even in the SB year...thank you very much Florida for Rex "Now, what color jerseys am I throwing the ball too?" Grossman) but was still able to do fairly well. His biggest mistake was in letting Ron Rivera get away.

Although most Chicagoans that are now calling for his head won't admit it, there was a time that he held the keys to the city in Chi town. Don't let anyone fool you he was universally loved by all.

IMO, he could do good things for UT if given the chance.

I'm giving him credit for those 2 years. But, I'm also giving him credit for the other 4. It cuts both ways.

Lovie has a great defensive mind. Grossman got injured the first 2yrs he was there, but in 2yrs he took their D from 22nd in the NFL to 2nd and went 11-5 in yr with a quarterback that was backing up REX GROSSMAN! He would work wonders with Janzen and the boys and like everyone states he is a class act. Let Cheney and Skippy handle the offense and we would be good. Let his D shut down Urban, it was Monte that kept us in all the games this yr, the great Lame couldn't provide the offense to beat Bama or Florida. We will be very competitive with Lovie.

Dungy is not going to coach again, IMO. Lovie is the next best alternative to Dungy, IMO.

All I want is an affirmation that we have talked with him. Hamilton should have a sit-down with Manning and Dungy. Explain to him the ability to change this university and these kids lives, and then put $6M on the table.

If he still turned us down, then OK. But at least we tried.

Considering our defense wasn't as good this year as 2008, I disagree. Most of that was due to injuries, but still. And, if you don't think our offense improved IMMENSELY, then you're nuts. It's the sole reason we did better than 2008.

I was all for Kiffin when he was pulling his secondary violations and whatnot, because hey, it worked.

But now that he's gone, I realize, that not only did he screw us over by leaving us with no coach 3 weeks before NSD, losing our greatest class in the past few years, BUT, he also left us with a bad reputation. Nukeese, Myles, Janzen (though not guilty, still associated), the NCAA looking at our actions, the hostess junk, and then the basketball team adding Tyler, Melvin, Brian, and Cam....

UT just doesn't look good right now. I think that Lovie could dramatically improve our rep, and maybe help these kids accomplish something even after football is over. These kids are people, and they deserve to have a coach who truly wants their well being, not a coach who is using them as a stepping stone to get somewhere else.

I want Lovie!
