Looks Like GMac and Faizon are Neck and Neck

Unsure what you mean.

Merk, granted, never developed. It happens.
Nico will probably be drafted on his gifts but his desire is suspect. He's a head case.
G-Mac is unproven after a redshirt year.
Faizon is only a few months in.

Heupel essentially put Hendon Hooker in the league, though he didn't sign him originally.
Heupel did a lot for getting Milton in the league though his physical gifts pretty much assured him a shot.
Heupel gave Joey A his best chance to get in the league.

Other than Merk, what QB at UT hasn't gotten better being at UT?
I don’t think Nico got any better in terms of his accuracy from the day he stepped on campus. What did get better was his footwork, hip rotation/control, and mechanics. For some reason none of those areas of improvement translated into making anyone believe he was the “generational” QB that he was billed as by the “experts”. I believe he’s a head case and can’t get out of his own way.

As a coach you always take production over potential but when production values are similar you let potential be the deciding factor…truth is with our current roster we need to play the guy who *can* get us the most wins…not the guarantee for a “safe” amount of wins.

This is portal ball. It’s playoffs or bust each year. We invested heavily in a S&C coach. I’m not excepting a national title, but I don’t want 8 wins again..,

Nico didn't put in the work because Nico is the textbook example of a gifted athlete who has been raised poorly.

He's better naturally than 95% of humans who want to play QB. The problem, as he gets older, is that guys that are beneath him are outworking him to get better and he's not working hard and the competition is much, much harder at higher levels as the lesser talent gets weeded out.

Gifts will get him a shot at the highest level and maybe some coach will get Nico's head out of his behind but I wouldn't bet on it.

I hope he enjoys pro volleyball.

You're probably right, I'm being somewhat guilty of what I accuse others of, and that's being impatient. I probably got too caught up in the Nico hype, and was very frustrated at his inability to run the offense. I really believe if we had Joey A that year, we would have been in the hunt for the natty. There was a heck of a lot of talent on that team, including an elite defense. I'm still a Heupel guy, so here's to hoping one of GMac or Faizon can get it done.
(Edit: meant to reply to SayUWantAreVolution)
I was at the Kentucky/Tennessee game in 2022 and saw Nico at the game in the lower bowl pregame. There was definitely a buzz around Nico and after the Iowa game, I was convinced we had a guy. I was comparing him to Bryce Young and Joe Burrow 😬

It just shows you that development isn’t linear and you never really know how a guy will handle the spotlight. With that being said, I do think Faizon can be our first Heisman winner and lead us to a 💍

Is that too much pressure to put on a 17 year old kid? Absolutely 😆 but he’s the number one QB and a 5 star for a reason and the fact that he’s already 6’4”, 220 as a freshman is kinda wild for a young guy.

A low bar will do that
Believe it or not, they have passed us in sports at the present. You could laugh and say it's just one year, but we will see. I hope Vol coaches, players and fans never treat a Vandy game lightly ever again. The attitude of "it's just little brother", "same ol Vandy", or even "they have a low bar for success" is partially what got us in this current mess.

GMAC probably the better choice, but Faizon looks much better back there from what I've seen in practices thus far. Think you'd have to adjust the entire offense to run with Faizon right now though.

I just don't think you can let a Qb hold you hostage because you're afraid he might leave. Technically he can't transfer out until January and by then there will be more Qbs on the roster.

I do think there is a big chance they will probably end up needing both, especially considering the schedule. So the Qb who starts may not be the one who finishes the season anyway. Heup will have a big decision to make regardless and possibly an even bigger decision if the named starter flops hard.

I do wonder if they both might see some snaps early if theyre still neck and neck come September.
I really dont think it's that close , I believe it's just all part of the process. Been said on here a thousand times "the back up qb is the best and most popular man on the team" just saying

Fans on boards an clickbait Talkin Vawls yeah they say that stuff but I don’t think Price or Hobbs would be saying the comments they did if it wasn’t true. They’re big enough that they get clicks and don’t have to rely on click bait

Hubbs and AP dont do that, especially Hubbs. He is too pessimistic to rave about a true freshman unless it’s serious.

GMac is ahead of Faizon in terms of playbook knowledge and the type of mechanics Heupel and Halzle teach. But, I think anyone that’s realistic knows that Faizon will surpass GMac in overall capability at some point within the next year. GMac is talented and it’s a shame the past S&C staff didn’t feel the urgency to put 10 to 15 pounds of good muscle weight on him the year they had him.

They actually did, he had gained 15 pounds from when he arrived here before Owings got here

I still trust Heup on selecting the right QB’s for his offense and it’s still early , season 5 months away, i think GMAC will be the guy leading us against Furman in week 1.

Still a long way to go but word is GMac isn't separating himself from the pack. Come August if it's still neck and neck don't be shocked to see Faizon leading this offense. The kid looks ready physically. What do yall think?

Let’s go with Joe Milton again and leave Hendon needing an injury to get a real chance.
