Something that I stubbed across when shopping for a new system. You can actually spend about 100 bucks less and get the 4GB version and still be able to use your old hard drive from your "fat" Xbox. Just simply detach the hard drive from your old unit and use torx screw drivers to take the actual HDD out of the casing. Then open the doors on your new Slim and simple match up the sata connection of the Slim Xbox to your old HDD. Takes about 5 minutes and requires minimum skill. Does not do anything to the warranty of your new Xbox and completely ok as the HDD is officially approved by MS. Thought I would share in case someone was facing this problem.

I could've told you this 8 months ago when I did it. Thanks, Mister Wizard!

It is very easy, though, but easier with a pair of 6" needle nose pliers. Otherwise you've got to more or less drop the hdd in and hope the prongs line up.
