Few survive long as HC in CFB. If you ask a terminated coach when he knew he'd get fired, reality answers, "The day I was hired."
So who has currently survived the longest? (as of June 2017)
1. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa, hired 1999
2. Gary Patterson, TCU, hired 2000
T3. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State, hired 2005
T3. Frank Solich, Ohio, hired 2005
T3. Kyle Whittingham, Utah, hired 2005
T6. Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern, hired 2006
T6. Rick Stockstill, Mid. Tennessee St., hired 2006
T8. Ken Niumatalolo, Navy, hired 2007
T8. Mark Dantonio, Michigan State, hired 2007
T8. David Bailiff, Rice, hired 2007
T8. Troy Calhoun, Air Force, hired 2007
T8. Nick Saban, Alabama, hired 2007
T13. Dabo Swinney, Clemson, hired 2008
T13. David Cutcliffe, Duke, hired 2008
T13. Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech, hired 2008
T13. Bobby Wilder, Old Dominion, hired 2008
T17. Dan Mullen, Mississippi State, hired 2009 - now moving on
T17. Bill Snyder, Kansas State, hired 2009
T17. Joey Jones, South Alabama, hired 2009
T20. Doc Holliday, Marshall, hired 2010
T20. Jimbo Fisher, Florida State, hired 2010 - possibly moving on
T20. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame, hired 2010
Who’s the longest tenured FBS coach now that Bob Stoops retiring? | For The Win
Notes:
(1) Trying to hire the #3 guy on the list, who is the most successful coach ever at his alma mater, wasn't ever gonna happen, even with a Texas-sized pile of cash. Mullet dude lives on a ranch. You ain't gonna buy an Okie off his ranch.
(2) Most CFB marriages end in a quick divorce. Even at Alabama. People forget the revolving door in Tuscaloosa for the 10 years between Stallings and Saban. Winning ain't easy in CFB, and esp in the SEC.
(3) The only thing that satisfies a fanbase is winning. A VFL like Tee or Steele won't satisfy VN without wins. Even Majors and Fulmer got axed without enough wins.
