Live blog: Jeff Gordon scores historic win at Atlanta

He snapped a tie with Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip for third on the career victory list. Petty (200) and Pearson (105) are the only drivers with more wins than Gordon(85), who received a special plaque from NASCAR during the victory ceremony in front of the main grandstand.

Nascar needs him,Earnhardt,Jr. and Tony Stewart to win more to keep Nascar interest with fans imo.

I used to not like him but I've found myself cheering for him lately. On the way home I was listening to the end of the races and I was hoping JJ wouldn't beat him.

I would have to agree with that last statement. Particularly Earnhardt.

NASCAR is is going to have to learn how to make a go of it without Dale Jr. I don't think he's going to win again.

You must not be aware of 2012 new rule where any car with a number that is the same when turned around and turned upside down gets a lap lead on the field.

That still probably won't help, but Reutimann, Hamlin, and McMurray are ecstatic.

This.

He has always had arguably the best equipment in the cup, but really hasn't come good. I really only think Hendricks actually re-signed him for his marketing prowess.

I wouldn't say he's not gonna win another race. He's got 24 restrictor plate races over the life of his contract. He's bound to win one of 'em.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jr. win a race, but I get sick and tired of hearing about how he's "turned things around" every time he strings together a couple of semi-good finishes. His fans cling to false hopes with every car he passes, which isn't many. Kinda sad.

And back on the topic of a driver that IS good. Congrats to Jeff. I couldn't stand him back when he won every other week, but I'm glad to see him win now.

I am getting that way too. I like the way Jeff races, and he has always seemed like a genuinely good guy. Same deal with Jimmie Johnson.

I' ok with Gordon. Not my favorite but I don't dislike him. I would have to see Johnson perform at a high level without Knaus before I'm sold on him.

Yeah he has only won five champs in a row, happens all the time. Knaus is a big part of the equation, but no one has won more than three, Johnson is for real.

Used to hate Gordon, but I don't mind him anymore. If he were to start winning like he used to, I'm sure I would go back to my hatred of him.

I know.... But untill him and Knaus seperate I can give Knaus all the credit if I want to.:p

Since Dale,Jr fans put all the blame on the crew chief(s), I guess the same logic can be used, if you want to. Not to say it is good logic.

I think once I came back out 30+ laps down I would have had to finish the job. It worked out in the long run though. He helped Jr get his lap back by bringing out a caution.

Would like to see Jeff get his 5th Championship this year. Best chance in quite awhile. If someome gets 2 wins in the final 10 and stays in the top 10 the rest of the way they win it all.

Off topic, but I didn't want to start a new Gordon thread. Jeff and Harvick shared a few jabs about last week's race. I think Jeff has a great point.

Gordon calls Harvick's Richmond win 'fishy' - NASCAR - Yahoo! Sports

I agree, that does sound very suspect. Mainly anytime you say "we don't need a caution," people are pulling strings.

I agree with Jeff on this, poor form on the part of Harvick's team.

Sorry to get off topic, but I really used to like Harvick, he races hard but he seems to have turned into a prick in the years I was not paying attention to NASCAR.
