Rewatched the WV game tonight to more or less try and find something to make me believe that we are improved from last season and I think I found several. But, what stuck out the most to me was a few players that I think really are a liability moving forward. Also, after rewatching it, I feel more positive about this team moving forward.

Liabilities:
#28 In this game was completely unable to shed a block or keep up with his man wether it was zone or man2man. Out of position many times as well.
#22 I really do like Abernathy but I don’t think he has the speed for that position. He also seems to be unable to shed blocks and contribute to stop the run.
#80 Poor blocking and inability to maintain blocks hurt the O on many occasions. He did have one solid block to seal off a db but aside from that he got beat a whole lot.
Initially I was going to add #51, as he got whipped bad early in the game, to this list but I do feel that Drew and the rest of the O-line got better as the game went along. I honestly feel like the O-line as a whole will get better.
#3 I don’t think he sees much more than special teams or mop up duty against cupcakes this year.

Swain talks about “dudes” and I think it was Fred White that used to say “we got some dogs on this team”. Well, I think we have a few “dudes” or “dogs” on this team too. #58 is mean and nasty and fun to watch, #73 is what we all know he is, #9 and #33 are hardnosed tough guys that are gonna dish out some punishment. #15, though didn’t play much, showed what we all know on the couple passes he caught. Very impressed by them. Thought #2 was a huge improvement as well.

Last thought and maybe somebody else knows the answer: #86 Craig played quite a bit of FB early in the game but was replaced by either Wolf/Bumphus or a combination of the two. Where was Blakely? Why did he not get any time after all we have heard about his progression at the TE and/or FB position.

Just my thoughts. Go Vols!!! I’ll be there for ETSU with my wife and my father and stepmom.

OP, I mean OP, :) this is a good rehash. I've watched the replay and the Pruitt show now. Was hoping to see X, Y, or Z that made me have hope for a big turnaround. Haven't.

But, with the things I watched, I agree on every point you spoke. Especially, #58. Wow, that boy's angry out there. Good post.

5, 19, 34, and 35 didn't play very well either, IMO. ESPECIALLY #5. Flesh magnet.

#40 JJR started practice yesterday. Looks to have good size. He's gonna relieve either #99 or #19 of some playing time and I'd prefer it be #99.
As OP stated I see #28 and #3 riding the pine and #22 not far behind. I had hopes that by now #3 would have stepped up his game at corner but being offsides on missed FG and letting receiver make catch and scamper for about 25 additional yds was all on him. Where are Shamburger, M.Gray, and T.Jackson at this point? I heard Shamburger was in CJP's doghouse. Anyone know what that's about?
#58 at LG is an excellent fit and the whole OLine seemed to get better as game went on. They still have a ways to go as a unit IMO.

Buchanan, Abernathy and Fowler all got toasted. Guess that’s the best we have so it is what it is.

We were in nickel the whole game, only two LBs on the field. WV took advantage of the youth in our backend. I am afraid other teams will do the same, gotta get pressure on the QB or this will be a long season.

All offseason I heard Kyle Phillips name and thought he would be one of our better players. Can’t recall hearing his name once Saturday. Now I had had a few beverages and was so wrapped up in the game that I may have missed him so forgive me if I’m wrong but where was he?

abernathy is barely a D-1 player, Buchanan was the result of getting out recruited. Looked like Mosely was still playing? Flowers was the result of missing out in recruiting... recruit better secondary players. Warrior did not exactly have a good game either. Theo Jackson had the only good play of the day by a TN db.

I'm concerned with front seven as a whole. They are all three to four year players and were high rated recruits, and they just can't seem to get it done. I'm hoping they aren't capped out. I'm hoping they can improve. If we cant get to the QB, then its going to be a long season.

This is what I’m worried about. The secondary didn’t look good but at least most of them are freshman. Taylor, flowers, and Thompson have a chance to be good players. We might be stuck with what we’ve got on the DL till Pruitt can get his guys in here

Look at one screen pass jg overthrew and 58 just absolutely destroyed his man. You talk about a pancake block. This one had fruit, whip cream and a ton of syrup.

And the two guys he got on Jordan’s td run. It looked sorta suspicious at first but it was a good block, unconventional as it may have been lol

I hate saying this, but in this defense , Phillips is not big or strong enough and is a liability, along with all others mentioned.

Our secondary is a liability. They looked slow and out of place. The offensive line was inconsistent. I thought that would be one thing we could see the improvement from. Gonna be a long season with no more than 5 wins.

Whole front 7 on defense is a liability. I don't see any dogs there. You got to generate pass rush or you could have Neon Deon back there and it wouldn't matter. I think lack of depth showed in the second half. You get tired as a pass rusher and you need quality to rotate in and out. We don't have real good first teamers and the second's are second's for a reason. Just doesn't paint a rosy picture for SEC play. Still this team can improve, their margin for error will be thin like it always seems to be.

I think the reality is that it's going to take 3 or 4 good recruiting years to turn this roster completely over and get solid SEC type players at least 2 levels deep for a solid game rotation.

We also need to do whatever it takes to keep this coaching staff together.

Year by year and step by step is what it's going to take for us to climb back up to the top of the mountain.

I'm really worn down by always having to be patient but there's no other options as a Big Orange blooded Tennessee fan.

I hope Pruitt and staff can make some huge strides in recruiting top players.
