Let's all take a step back and look at this objectively...

Dabo had a losing season in 2010, fired Napier at OC, hired Chad Morris as his OC, and then won the ACC in 2011. He had talent and hired an OC that could get the most out of them. The rest is history. Butch can do the same thing. Will he? I really hope so.

This is what needs to happen. I know a lot of folks are mad at Shoop, but he is a proven DC that is in his first season at UT and dealing with major injuries at LB and DT (where we have little depth). You have to give him a pass and expect major improvement next season. I think the defense will be ok. Butch has to let go of the offense and hire someone good at OC, let him hire his staff, and leave him alone. We're still going to have the players next season to really produce on offense...hell, there's a good chance we improve on offense if Debord sticks around with Dormady/Guarantano and Kelly...but we won't come close to maximizing our talent under Debord.

I know plenty won't agree, but I view Butch a lot like I do Dabo Swinney. He was on the hotseat early on at Clemson and was mostly a good recruiter and motivator. His hire of Chad Morris in 2011 really started to turn things around and his hire of Brent Venables the next year helped solidify the defense.

Butch hired a good DC in Shoop (despite what some unreasonable fans think). Now he has to go get a good OC if he wants a championship team. Otherwise, the ceiling will always be 8-9 wins. I really think the 2017 Vols can be great if we have the right staff on offense leading them.

I agree on shoop. D only gave up 10 points last night without turnovers. Offense just doesn't seem to grasp holding onto the ball is a win (coaching IMO). We have enough talent on offense to put up points. Putting up 38 on Florida and A&M shows we can. Putting up 20 on app state and SC shows we are inconsistent (coaching again IMO). So, the changes need to be made, as you said. To your question, he let longtime assistants go the past two years. Shoop was a slam dunk hire. If he can do that once, he can do it again and that would be evidence of a championship level coach.

Don't forget, Meyer is struggling on offense right now and could have two losses in the big 10. Even the best have to surround themselves with great assistants. Hopefully Butch will see this through and make the necessary changes.

Oh, one other thing. If kids need to be motivated constantly to play hard then they don't deserve the uniforms they wear. Just my opinion.

No...no one likes playing for a coach that can't win the way they're supposed to.

You put your body on the line every play. Then you look up and see you have a coach who can't get it done.

No. It's impossible to play for a man who sucks the energy right out of you.

Great points. He lost to Dooley and sold a vision he could never keep. Recruiting is gonna drop off. We will still get a couple high ranked guys but it will be more likely 15 three starts vs 15 four stars from here on out. Also has made very bad hires.

Are you saying it's up to 18-22 year olds to determine the way they're supposed to play? I just figure if you like to compete then you always want to beat the guy across from you. Maybe kids these days are spoiled. Who knows.

I cant tell if Butch is really a good recruiter or not. If he is, then he's one hell of a horrible coach when it comes to development and game day planning.

But what I really think is true is that he's mostly not a good recruiter either. There has been a clear difference between the 4* guys that we get and the one's that Bama and others get. What I mean is that Bama gets the upper end of the 4* spectrum and we get the trash OR we get the "problem children" who are highly rated but no other teams really want them. They may offer them, but they choose others first.

Everyone knew pass/run the way hurd lined up w dobbs early on. Worst most obvious formation ever that i can remember. Was happy to see that dissapear. But if i recall butch stuck w that for a nearly or a whole season. Its just frustrating to see the lack of adjustments on the fly

Don't know if this is true. A lot of this comes down to how they're developed and how they're used in the scheme. The best OC's/DC's/HC's understand how to recruit, develop, (and of equal importance) how to scheme around these players.

Tyler Byrd is a great example, as is Evan Berry. I'd be willing to bet that Kiffin, Petrino, etc... would've had offensive packages for these guys that would have them multiple touchdowns or long gains this year.
