I think we just don’t hire anyone and let the boys just take the field and have fun. No expectations, no stress, just go out and do your best. I actually think that would appeal to future recruits.

“If you want to have fun and get back to the roots of why you play the game of football...to have fun...then come to Tennessee. No coach will be there to mess up your bliss.”

Ya?

Yes! Hire an OC and a DC. Pay these people the bigger $$$$$, not the dang HC. Make sure their resumes meet criteria, like SEC experience or proven and/or sustained success against P5 opponents. Hold them accountable, measure their progress.

Set up recruiting to recruit for the school, sell what you can offer in terms of facilities and opportunity. Stop recruiting based on the HC. If you need someone in an HC role, then define it, NOT to include hiring and firing. Do that another way. Anyway the HC figure reps the school, not self via an agent.

Really folks, where has today's model of this process really worked for 80-90% of college football? We pay one guy to make the decisions? Has that really worked for us and others?

As a boss told me after I said, "well that is the orgs policy" ....... he asked "who wrote the policy?" I said the org did. He said, "well then we can rewrite." So who the F says we gotta keep perpetuating the same insane process?

I firmly believe it can be better than the current process. In this scenario HC is a salaried employee of UT who implements and evaluates the program. Responsibilities are comeasurate with the position w/o the huge responsibility of doing everything. Quite frankly he won't get paid that much, relative to an HC salary. Folks in government contracting might liken this position to a COTR.

THE OC and DC can now be offered way more than they might make under normal circumstances. Like up to $2M plus bonuses, something like that - just blow the going rate of today outta the water. No buy out crap, or very little. But you will have to offer a chance at high $$$$ to attract what you want. This scenario allows you to fire an underperforming OC or DC without turning over the whole cart. Plus you get to control who and what system comes in. It's no longer totally on the HC to get it done, and avoids what CBJ did, essentially unilaterally, with Debord and Scott.

You want to get these premadonna HC attention? Flip the script. Pay the talent who prove to be good at being an OC or DC, can evaluate and coach talent and who show they can get it done on game day. After all good OCs and DCs make a HC look good (right until they take a new job, get in over their heads, turn over the BSiA in 3 years and then go 4-8. Sound familiar?)
