Slams the pac-10/USC: 2theadvocate.com | Sports | Clear for Miles -- Baton Rouge, LA

"I can tell you this, that they have a much easier road to travel,” Miles said of the Trojans. “They’re going to play real knockdown drag-outs with UCLA and Washington, Cal-Berkley, Stanford — some real juggernauts — and they’re going to end up, it would be my guess, in some position so if they win a game or two, that they’ll end up in the title (game)."

A fellow on wearesc.com posted the following statistics:

LSU 2007 Football Schedule:

Aug 30 at Mississippi State 16
Sept 08 Virginia Tech 32
Sept 15 Middle Tennessee 3
Sept 22 South Carolina 24
Sept 29 at Tulane 5
Oct 06 Florida 43
Oct 13 at Kentucky 7
Oct 20 Auburn 35
Nov 03 at Alabama 25
Nov 10 Louisiana Tech 9
Nov 17 at Ole Miss 22
Nov 23 Arkansas 17

Total NFL Players 238 : Total SEC NFL Players 189

USC 2007 football schedule:

September 1 Idaho 2
September 15 at Nebraska 38
September 22 Washington State 21
September 29 at Washington 23
October 6 Stanford 27
October 13 Arizona 20
October 20 at Notre Dame 41
October 27 at Oregon 23
November 3 Oregon State 13
November 10 at California 33
November 22 at Arizona State 25
December 1 UCLA 28

Total NFL Players 294 : Total PAC 10 NFL Players 213

Here is another breakdown with USC opponents in bold:

Florida 43
at Notre Dame 41
at Nebraska 38

Auburn 35
at California 33
Virginia Tech 32
UCLA 28
Stanford 27
at Arizona State 25
at Alabama 25
South Carolina 24

Arizona 20

Arkansas 17

Oregon State 13

The fact is that since 1986, SEC teams have a record of .500 against the PAC 10 which turns out to be exactly the record SEC teams have against SEC teams.

How exactly would it be possible for SEC teams to have anything other than a combined .500 record in SEC play?

Yeah I thought that was kind of funny too. I'm pretty sure he realized this.

First of all, Les Miles is an idiot. Second of all, I'd say he's probably only looking at last season's results. I don't think games from 1986 are very relevant concerning difficulty of LSU and USC's schedules.

Agreed, but this logic that year in and year out SC plays a much easier schedule than the average SEC team is disputed by these statistics. If SEC teams played 9 conference games like the pac-10 and played all the top teams in the conference certainly their schedule would be much harder. But in reality the average SEC team has 2 or 3 very hard games and a bunch of cupcakes. Let's get this straight, i'm not saying LSU's schedule is easier than SCs, just that miles is out line here. And he comes off as a whiner. Let's see him come to the pac-10, take over washington or something, and see how easily he can dominate.

Well at least if they were to meet in the title game he has given them good bulletin board material.

He couldn't. They don't have a boatload of talent like LSU does. He had a good OC at Oklahoma State which allowed him moderate success there. He then had another good one at LSU. Jimbo Fisher is gone. If Gary Crowton doesn't pan out, LSU is going to slide.

Fulmerites listen up! Phil Fulmer could do more with Les Miles' talent. They were easily the deapest college football team on the planet last year. As long as he is there the rest of the SEC has a prayer.

An excellent point I would say. It could be argued that LSU has underachieved the last couple of years despite making the BCS. Crowton is not a great OC. He showed that at Oregon when he consistantly decided to throw the ball despite having 2 fantastic RBs, a verteran oline, and a running QB who is prone to throwing many ints.

I don't like Miles . . . I think he has no class.

But in this case, can't argue with him. Year in, year out, LSU's road to the big game is much tougher.

USC does have an easier road this year.

I still think Miles will coach LSU down and be gone within a few years. It was a stupid hire buoyed by great talent and the retention of two good coordinators.

I think his statement about USC just having to win a couple big games and they put themselves in a title run position is pretty accurate. No question LSU has a tougher title run, even if we're just talking about the SEC Champ game.

The Pac 10 pundits always argue that they don't need a "title game" because they play each other every year. That's a good way to settle the Pac 10 championship on the field, I agree 100%

But in the SEC if you're LSU you're probably going to have to beat Florida TWO times in a year to prove that you're "worthy" of being in the national championship. That makes the SEC Championship game the most significant game of the college football season (other than the actual Nat'l Championship game).

Les Miles is a fool.. He definately knows X's and O's but when it comes to other stuff I wish he would keep his mouth shut... Everytime he opens his mouth he just sticks his foot in it...

Yes, Les Miles is an idiot. But I agree that year in and year out the SEC elite has a tougher road to hoe than those of the PAC-10.

That's not to say that USC is any less of a team, but as another pointed out, in the SEC you may very well have to beat an elite team twice.

Again, Les Miles is a bafoon - but not for the comments in question.
